وأوضح المصدر أن هذه المحاولة غير الناجحة حصلت قبل أن تعلن الحكومة البريطانية الجمعة أنها ستجيز لواشنطن استخدام بعض قواعدها لضرب مواقع إيرانية تستعمل لمهاجمة سفن في مضيق هرمز.
وكانت صحيفة وول ستريت جورنال نقلت أن طهران أطلقت صاروخين بالستيين في اتجاه القاعدة، لكن أيا منهما لم يصب هدفه، فالأول شهد خللا خلال تحليقه فيما تم اعتراض الثاني، وفق مسؤولين أميركيين.
