وأفادت هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية -وفقًا لوكالة الصين الجديدة (شينخوا)- بأن الزلزال وقع في منطقة تبعد 114 كيلومترًا شمال شرق قرية هيهيفو في تونجا عند التقاء دائرة عرض 15.14 درجة جنوبًا، وخط طول 173.13 درجة غربًا وبعمق 10 كيلومترات.
ولم ترد أنباء عن وقوع خسائر بشرية أو أضرار مادية جراء الزلزال.
