قالت هيئة المساحة الجيولوجية ، إن النشاط الزلزالي في المملكة يتركز على مستوى المملكة بمنطقة الدرع العربي وعلى امتداد البحر الأحمر من شماله إلى جنوبه.
وأضافت عبر حسابها الرسمي على موقع “إكس”، أن نطاق خليج العقبة الذي يعد من أنشط النطق الزلزالية على مستوى المملكة، نتيجة لما حدث به من نشاط زلزالي تاريخي وحديث.
وأوضحت أن النشاط الزلزالي في نطاق خليج العقبة يتراوح قدره ما بين متوسط إلى كبير.

وقالت “المساحة الجيولوجية” إن هذا النشاط يرتبط بأنظمة الحدود التكتونية المحيطة بالمملكة من الاتجاه الغربي متمثلة في نطاق البحر الأحمر، بالإضافة إلى نشاط الصدوع الموازية والعامودية على البحر الأحمر داخل المملكة، علاوة على نشاط الصهير البركاني تحت مناطق الحرات البركانية الممتدة من جنوب إلى شمال منطقة الدرع العربي، بداية من منطقة جازان، عسير الباحة، مكة المكرمة، ومنطقة المدينة المنورة، وصولاً إلى شمال المملكة.
