Hyderabad: Despite the southwest monsoon advancing across the state, 17 of Telangana’s 33 districts continued to report deficient or large deficient rainfall this season, according to the Telangana Development Planning Society’s (TGDPS) district-wise rainfall data.

The report, which analysed rainfall between June 1 and June 25, shows that Telangana has received 88.3 mm of rainfall against the normal 105.4 mm, leaving the state with a cumulative deficit of 16 per cent. The overall rainfall status for the state continues to be classified as ‘normal’.

Only three districts —Rangareddy, Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool —have recorded excess cumulative rainfall. Rangareddy hasreceived 131.6 mm (normal 82.7 mm; 59 per cent excess), Nalgonda 97.4 mm (74.2 mm normal; 31 per cent excess) and Nagarkurnool 92.3 mm (71.7 mm normal; 29 per cent surplus).

Thirteen districts fell in the normal category. Of these, Hyderabad received 102.2 mm of rainfall so far this season against the normal 90.9 mm, an excess of 12 per cent over the seasonal average. The other districts were Mahbubnagar, Mulugu, Suryapet, Sangareddy, Khammam, Vikarabad, Narayanpet, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Wanaparthy and Medak.

Siddipet and Hanamkonda were in the ‘large deficient category’ with rainfall falling 62 and 76 per cent respectively. Warangal was on the edge, with a 59 per cent deficit. Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Jagitial, Mahabubabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rajanna Sircilla, Kamareddy, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial and Jogulamba Gadwal also recorded deficient rainfall, according to the society data.

On Thursday, Nirmal recorded the state’s highest rainfall at 22.9 mm, nearly five times its normal rainfall of 4.5 mm. Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Medak and Suryapet received above-normal rainfall during the day, while several districts, including Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Mulugu and Peddapalli, recorded little or no rain.

Hanamkonda has had only three rainy days since June 1, the fewest in Telangana, while Jogulamba Gadwal has recorded four.
