He didn’t wait for a team or someone else to take action. At just 19, Kartik Sahani stepped into the Tamsa River to clean it himself.
The river in Mau, Uttar Pradesh, had become filled with waste, even though Kartik’s family farmland depends on it for irrigation. So every day, he spent 3–4 hours in the river, removing waste with his own hands. In just 22 days, he cleared more than 1,000 kg of waste.
Now that the river has been cleaned, Kartik has his eyes on the next challenge: a pond in his neighbourhood. His story is a reminder that change can start with just one person willing to take the first step.
Is there a place in your city that needs someone like Kartik?
