HYDERABAD: Two final-year B. Tech Geoinformatics students of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) won first prize at the 47th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS 2026) for a project that uses artificial intelligence and geospatial technology to monitor and mitigate urban heat islands.

Shiva Kumar Induri and M. Akhil Kumar, from JNTUH University College of Engineering Hyderabad, received the award for their project, Cool City AI: A Scalable Open-Source Geo AI and WebGIS Architecture for monitoring and mitigating urban heat islands. It won the top prize in the ISRS-I-CON innovation contest for geospatial information technology at the conference, held in New Delhi from October 12 to 16.

The students received Rs 25,000 and the I-CON Awards 2026 certificate. The conference was jointly organised by the Indian Society of Geoinformatics and the Indian Society of Remote Sensing.

The project focuses on using AI, geospatial data and web-based geographic information systems to track urban heat islands and support mitigation measures. Urban heat islands occur when built-up areas become warmer than their surroundings, often because roads and buildings absorb and retain heat.
