Jordan Smith entered his rookie season on the PGA Tour with one main goal: to play a second season.
“Obviously, my first year out here, and we’ve played a lot, we had to play a lot. Just keeping our card this year was our goal,” Smith said after his season round at Colonial. “We’ve got off to a really good start, which is really nice to see. So, yeah, just going to try and push on from that and try and get on to some of the playoff events and see what happens.”
The 33-year-old Englishman has played well in his rookie season on the PGA Tour. He has made 10 of 15 cuts and carded a third-place finish at the Valspar Championship back in March.
But after back-to-back rounds of 65 at Colonial, Smith enters the weekend at the Charles Schwab Challenge holding a one-shot lead over Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Michael Thorbjornsen and Ryan Gerard. He’s 36 holes away from a two-year exemption and his first career PGA Tour win.
But there’s a lot of golf to be played before Smith can call himself a PGA Tour winner.
“It’s going to be a new experience for us out here leading for the first time,” Smith said of playing with the lead on the weekend. “So, yeah, I’m excited. Just going to stick to what I’ve been doing the last two days. Yeah, just see what happens, not going to force anything, not going to rush anything, just going to see what happens and enjoy it.”
