Cam Smith in the hunt at US PGA

By Peter Ryan

The big news is that Australia’s Cam Smith is just one shot off overnight leader Alex Smalley after an outstanding front nine in the final round of the US PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

The Aussie is five-under par in the tournament after shooting three birdies on the front nine. He is battling off the tee but is well in the tournament with the inexperienced Smalley just holding off Justin Thomas, who is in the clubhouse at -5, Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, Canada’s Nick Taylor, Spain’s Jon Rahm and Germany’s Matti Schmid.

Rory McIlroy is lurking on -4 thru seven holes and Scottie Scheffler is -2 thru 17 holes so is out of the race.

Roaring Rory back in PGA Championship title contention

Rory McIlroy’s quest for more golf history is back alive after the dual Masters champ stormed into the PGA Championship title contention on a chaotic moving day in Pennsylvania.

McIlroy briefly snatched the clubhouse lead with a birdie-filled third-round four-under-par 66 to continue his remarkable comeback after languishing in a tie for 105th on Thursday.

McIlroy declared himself “right back in it” after climbing to a share of 30th at one over on Friday.

Then, after starting his third round five shots back of Americans Maverick McNealy and Alex Smalley, he reeled in the halfway co-leaders with six birdies in his first 13 holes.

Winless American out to shock PGA Championship field

The 108th PGA Championship is headed for a spectacular Sunday shootout on the back nine as unfancied Alex Smalley strives to again hold off golf’s biggest names after claiming the solo third-round lead in Pennsylvania.

Smalley produced a spirited back-nine fightback to post a gritty two-under-par 68 and surge two strokes clear of a pack of five players in equal second place at Aronimink Golf Club.

Spanish superstar Jon Rahm was in contention alongside LIV compatriot Cam Smith as the cream of world golf rose on an action-packed moving day outside of Philadelphia.

After two chilly days bit hard, Saturday gave way to bright sunshine and Rahm and Rory McIlroy were among the heavyweights to take advantage.
