It’s not just scares that can make you jump. A movie can surprise you by how frightening it is, sure, but it’s also a pretty key element for comedy. No one ever talks about how crucial it is for drama, though. A sad moment that comes out of nowhere knocks the wind out of you in a way that literally doesn’t hit the same upon repeat viewings.
That’s why it’s so impressive when a sucker punch of tragedy really does get you just as hard every time. Even when you know what to expect and you can gird your emotional loins well in advance, there are some situations you can just never adequately prepare for, even when they’re happening to fictional people.
