Kolkata: West Bengal has recorded a spurt in crime– 2,454 rape cases and 600 murder cases– in the first five months of the maiden BJP government in the state. An RTI application filed by former Rajya MP Saket Gokhale of Mamata All India Trinamool Congress revealed the shocking data, from May to September 24, compiled by the state crime records bureau (SCRB).

The state also witnessed 13,114 cases of attempt to murder and 32,341 cases of grievous hurt caused by assault during the period. According to the SCRB data, the number of rape cases stood at 349 in May, 389 in June, 786 in July, 459 in August and 471 in September while the number of murder cases were 125 in May, 134 in June, 133 in July, 111 in August and 97 in September.

Sharing the SCRB data on Wednesday, Mamata AITC claimed on X-handle, “SHOCKING: 2,400+ RAPE CASES IN BENGAL IN JUST 5 MONTHS UNDER BJP! @BJP4Bengal is turning Bengal into a place where women and ordinary citizens are increasingly being forced to live in fear. According to the State Crime Records Bureau, nearly 2,454 rape cases were recorded in just 5 months. And the numbers don’t stop there: 600 murder cases, 13,114 attempted murder cases, 32,341 cases of assault causing grievous hurt.”

It alleged, “Let that sink in. Is this the “safe and secure Bengal” BJP promised? Is this what they meant by “Bhorsha In, Bhoy Out”? Because the reality on the ground tells a very different story. A Bengal where crime is rising, criminals feel emboldened, and women increasingly fear for their safety is not a Bengal anyone should accept as normal. The people of Bengal deserve security, accountability and justice – not JUMLAS. And @SuvenduWB, you cannot keep hiding behind slogans and hollow promises. SHAME ON YOU. YOU have failed the people of Bengal. We have been saying it since Day 1 – and with every passing day, your failures are becoming harder to hide!”

BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar however pointed out that most of the cases were old and related to the previous regime. He argued, “No complaints used to be registered during TMC rule. NCRB didn’t have any data at all. After Mr Adhikari became CM, many delayed complaints of rape, which took place long back, were lodged as per a Supreme Court order. It is us who helped in the registration of FIRs of the crime that took place during post-poll violence.”

He added, “Whether the victim belongs to CPI(M) or Congress or even TMC, everyone has got the right to lodge their complaints now. However a narrative about the spurt in crime in the first five months of the BJP-rule here is being spread to fool public. This is totally false. One should check the date of the occurrence of the crime which is reported now. We have taken a zero tolerance policy towards it.”
