Chennai: Close on the heels of the Union government increasing the Dearness Allowance (DA) to its employees, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced a three per cent rise in DA to state government employees and teachers with retrospective effect from July 1, incurring an additional annual expenditure of Rs 1,858 crore for the government.

An official press release on Saturday said that the DA rates would now go up to 63 per cent from the earlier 60 per cent and that the move was in recognition of the exemplary services of government employees and teachers who were instrumental in devising and implementing the plethora of welfare schemes envisaged by the present TVK government for the benefit of the common people.

Since the Union government increased the DA rate from 60 per cent to 63 per cent for its employees and teachers from July, the Chief Minister took up the issue for consideration and decided that the state government would also raise the DA rate on par with the Union government from July 1, the official press release said.

The measure by the Chief Minister aimed at the welfare of 16 lakh government employees, teachers, pensioners and family pensioners would enable them to celebrate the coming Deepavali festival with fervour, the release said.
