A 38-year-old US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer stationed at JFK Airport, Juan Cornelio Diaz killed his girlfriend, 37-year-old Andrea Cantarini, following which he took his own life. The death Andrea, who was a nurse at St. Barnabas Hospital, left her father, retired NYPD officer Rudy Cantarini, with the biggest heartbreak of his life. Right after reportedly fatally shooting Andrea, Juan called her dad and and uttered chilling final words.
Juan addressed Rudy Cantarini by his name and told him that his daughter was ‘gone.’ Moments after making the confession, Andrea’s dad heard a gunshot, which was likely the sound of the bullet Juan fired to take his own life. Recalling the horrific moment, the bereaved father told The Post:
“He actually told me, ‘she’s gone, Rudy’ when I heard the gunshot. ‘She’s gone, Rudy.'”
The apparent dreadful murder-suicide took place just minutes after the NYC nurse made a desperate plea to her father, asking him to save her life in her final phone call. Rudy Cantarini told The Post that his daughter had called him at 8:47 p.m. and in her final moments, she was ‘begging for her life.’ Rudy claimed that she stayed on the phone with him while her boyfriend allegedly shot her in the head.
Rudy was devastated during the helpless situation when he knew his daughter was in a dire situation, but he couldn’t do anything to save her. He said that Andrea Cantarini was everything to him, and he would have to live with the heartbreak of losing his beloved child for the rest of his life.
Sharing what he thinks was the cause of Juan’s drastic step, Rudy stated that Andrea wanted to break up with her boyfriend, which didn’t sit right with him and led him to kill her and himself. The bereaved father called Juan a ‘coward’ for his act and stated:
“I have to live with this the rest of my life, and she was the apple of eye. She just didn’t want to be in a relationship with the guy anymore, and he couldn’t take it, so he did the coward’s thing, and he killed her and himself.”
