Hyderabad: Four youths, including three young women, drowned after being swept away by strong waves while taking selfies at Peddaganagallavanipet beach in Srikakulam district.

The victims were among 25 trainees staying at a hostel in Kotharoddu in Srikakulam town. They had visited the beach on Tuesday, a holiday on the occasion of Dasara.

According to reports, Kondala Madhavi (19), from Kenguva village in Vizianagaram district, Gollapalli Pavani (19), from Ramabhadrapuram, and Marri Mahi (18), from Mavudi village in Parvathipuram Manyam district, went into the water while taking selfies.

They reportedly got stuck in the mud at the confluence of the Nagavali river and the sea before being swept away by the waves. Biddika Vikram (22), from Vankalagedda village in Parvathipuram Manyam district, tried to rescue the women but was also swept away.

Police have placed warning boards at the spot, declaring the area prohibited due to the presence of mud at the river-sea confluence.

Firefighters launched a search operation after receiving information about the incident. The bodies of Mahi and Pavani were recovered on Tuesday evening, while those of Vikram and Madhavi were found near Kunduvanipeta beach on Wednesday.

The 125 trainees from different districts had joined a marketing agency for job training. While 100 of them had gone home for the Dasara holidays, the remaining 25 were staying at the hostel.
