Hyderabad: The Malkajgiri traffic police booked 450 cases on motorists having illegal and improper vehicle number plates on Tuesday and imposed fines totalling Rs 80,000. The drive focused on vehicles displaying fancy, tampered, obscured, or non-standard number plates.

Officials said 66 motorists with repeated violations were charge-sheeted, including those found using irregular number plates for the third time and vehicles without number plates during the drive carried out under the supervision of DCP Traffic-I K. Rahul Reddy that was monitored by the ACPs of Trimulgherry and Malkajgiri divisions.

Enforcement teams checked for compliance with High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) norms, including proper font, size, spacing, and visibility.

Police noted that improper number plates hinder identification of vehicles involved in offences and weaken surveillance systems, posing a serious threat to public safety.

Authorities advised motorists to use only authorised HSRP number plates and remove any illegal modifications immediately. They warned that repeat offenders would face strict legal action, including prosecution in court.

The police said such special drives will continue regularly to ensure adherence to traffic rules and enhance road safety.
