Hyderabad: An average of 47 per cent of youth across 56 major castes in Telangana have studied in English medium though access varies widely between communities, according to the caste survey conducted by the Congress government in 2024-25.While Scheduled Caste (SC) Malas are on par with the state average of 47 percent, most SC and Scheduled Tribe (ST) groups fall below it.

“When we look across the 56 major castes in Telangana, on an average 47 per cent of those under 30 from each caste have studied in English medium. However, the access varies widely with 72 per cent of OC Brahmins and OC Komatis compared to just 11 per cent of ST Kolams,” it said. The survey’s Education Backwardness Index of 56 major castes showed that OC Jains have high levels of educational attainment, while BC Oddes are the most educationally disadvantaged at the bottom, according to the Independent Expert Working Group (IEWG) headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy, which analysed the caste survey reports.
Interestingly, OC Reddys are about the same as some Backward Class communities-such as BC category SC Christians and Goldsmiths, the report said. The report highlighted the financial vulnerability among the SC, ST, OBCs, saying theyare being pushed into debt by a sudden medical expense or for a wedding in the family.
It added that just four out of the 242 castes – Madigas of SC, Lambadis of ST, Mudiraj and Yadavas of BC constitute roughly 40 per cent of the 1.1 crore extremely poor people with less than one lakh rupees annual income in Telangana.
The survey also showed that 25.1 per cent of households in the state are female headed with the highest share among SCs (27.9 per cent), followed by BC All (25.9 per cent), ST (23.5 per cent) and OC (20.6 per cent).
