As injuries mount in the San Francisco 49ers‘ wide receiver room, general manager John Lynch is bringing in a reinforcement.
Brandin Cooks will sign with the 49ers’ practice squad, according to a league source, with the intention of ramping him up to join the active roster. San Francisco hopes Cooks, who turns 33 on Friday, will help fill the void in a room decimated by injuries to Ricky Pearsall, De’Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson.

Cooks last played for the New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills in 2025. In 15 combined games, he caught 24 passes for 279 yards. The Stockton native is well past his prime, having last racked up 1,000-plus receiving yards with the Houston Texans in 2021. Nonetheless, Cooks was one of the most accomplished receivers on the market, ranking fifth among active players in career receiving yards (9,811), sixth in receptions (734) and sixth in receiving touchdowns (60). Cooks and Brandon Marshall are only two players in NFL history with 1,000-yard receiving seasons with four teams.
The 6-foot Cooks joins rookie receivers Wesley Grimes and Will Pauling on the 49ers’ practice squad. On the active roster, here’s the list of San Francisco’s healthy wideouts: Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins and KhaDarel Hodge.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that the team was weighing whether to place Robinson, who will miss three to six weeks with a high ankle sprain, on the injured reserve list. In order to promote Cooks, the 49ers will likely have to make that move, unless they choose to carry seven receivers or waive someone currently in the room.
