49ers’ Deebo Samuel reacts publicly for first time since blockbuster news of reunion

Deebo Samuel appears to be ready to rejoin the San Francisco 49ers.

On Friday morning, Samuel posted a photo on his Instagram story that featured him lying inside a plane.

The image of Samuel on a flight likely indicates he’s headed to the 49ers’ practice facility in Santa Clara, CA, as it was reported that Samuel and the team came to terms on a one-year, $7 million contract.

Samuel is will be reuniting with the 49ers after spending last season with the Washington Commanders, where he appeared in 16 games and had 727 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns, despite the absence of Jayden Daniels, who missed time due to multiple injuries.

His first stint in San Francisco lasted six seasons from 2019-2024. He was used as a hybrid weapon lining up at wide receiver and running back, and was notorious for making explosive plays, having 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Samuel’s best year with the 49ers came in 2021 when he earned All-Pro honors, with 1,405 receiving yards, 77 receptions, and 6 touchdowns. In the backfield, he had 59 carries for 365 yards and 8 touchdowns. His longest run that season went for 49 yards.

During their first stint together, the 49ers and Samuel went to two Super Bowls. The first was in Samuel’s rookie season, in 2019-2020, and again in 2023-2024. Both games resulted in losses to the Kansas City Chiefs.

His second stint with the team comes days after the 49ers received news that they could be without third-year wide receiver Ricky Pearsall and Christian Kirk, as they’re both expected to miss time due to injury.

The 49ers received unfortunate news about Pearsall on Thursday afternoon as it was revealed he could potentially have season-ending knee surgery due to a PCL injury he had last season.

Pearsall was selected by the 49ers in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft and has struggled to find time on the field, appearing in only 20 games through two seasons.

Kirk was brought in as a free agent over the offseason as a depth piece to the wide receiver room, but he’s now absent after exiting Sunday’s practice with a calf strain.

With the addition of Samuel, the 49ers’ room will now be paired alongside veteran wide receiver Mike Evans and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling, who was selected by the team in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
