The San Francisco 49ers are turning to experience once again. Injuries have continued to reshape their wide receiver room. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, San Francisco is signing veteran wideout Brandin Cooks. That adds another proven weapon to Brock Purdy’s arsenal. At 32, Cooks brings 12 seasons of NFL experience and plenty of explosive ability. That said, his arrival also highlights how heavily the 49ers are leaning on veteran playmakers. Ricky Pearsall, De’Zhaun Stribling, and Demarcus Robinson are dealing with injuries. Christian Kirk remains on injured reserve. These have left Kyle Shanahan with an unusually experienced collection of skill-position talent.

Christian McCaffrey is 30, Kyle Juszczyk is 35, Mike Evans is 33, Deebo Samuel is 30, Cooks is 32, Kirk is 29, Robinson is 32, KhaDarel Hodge is 31, and George Kittle is 32. Jacob Cowing provides one of the few younger options in the group. These mean San Francisco is increasingly depending on veteran savvy, durability, and familiarity with Shanahan’s system. That approach can provide immediate reliability. Of course, the physical demands of a 17-game season make depth increasingly important as well.
Cooks has spent his career establishing himself as a relatively reliable vertical threat. Selected 20th overall by the New Orleans Saints in 2014, he has recorded six 1,000-yard seasons. He also became just the second player to reach that mark with four different franchises: New Orleans, New England, Los Angeles, and Houston. Across 173 regular-season games, Cooks has 734 receptions, 9,811 yards, and 60 touchdowns. Now, just 189 yards shy of 10,000, the veteran arrives in San Francisco with another opportunity to make his experience count.
