Bhubaneswar : A five-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after being mauled by a pack of stray dogs while attending the call of nature behind her school in Odisha’s Ganjam district, triggering fresh concerns over the growing menace of stray animals in the area.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Mahanala Saraswati Sishu Mandir in Mahanala village under Sanakhemundi block. The victim, a Class I student, had gone to the backyard of the school when the dogs suddenly attacked her, leaving her with multiple bite injuries.

Hearing her screams, teachers rushed to the spot, chased away the dogs and rescued the child. She was immediately taken to the Adapada Community Health Centre for treatment.

Doctors said the girl suffered multiple injuries but her wounds were treated promptly and her condition is currently stable.

The latest incident comes barely six weeks after another young girl from the same village was attacked by stray dogs on May 23. She underwent treatment for several weeks at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar before returning home recently.

Residents say the recurring attacks have created widespread fear, especially among children. Their concerns were further heightened after a monkey, suspected to have turned aggressive, injured 12 people in the neighbouring Nistipur village on June 16.

Locals have urged the district administration to take immediate measures to control the stray dog population and address the growing menace posed by aggressive monkeys, warning that the absence of timely intervention could lead to more such incidents.
