New Delhi: Strong earthquake tremors were felt across Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and several other northern Indian states on Saturday evening after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 7:04 pm IST with its epicentre in Afghanistan at a depth of 215 km. The agency said the quake was recorded at latitude 36.442°N and longitude 70.672°E.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake struck about 43 km south of Jurm in north-eastern Afghanistan.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Afghanistan. The Red Cross noted that the country is highly vulnerable to earthquakes due to its location along the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates and the presence of major fault lines.

The tremors came amid increased seismic activity in the region, with at least five moderate earthquakes striking Pakistan’s Balochistan province since Friday. The quakes, ranging from magnitude 4.3 to 5.3, reportedly injured at least five people and damaged several mud houses in remote areas.

The regional activity also coincided with recent global seismic events, including a 4.9-magnitude earthquake off Venezuela’s Aragua region on Saturday, just days after two powerful earthquakes devastated parts of the South American nation.

Authorities said the death toll from Venezuela’s twin earthquakes had risen to nearly 1,000, with hundreds injured and rescue operations continuing as aid teams reached the worst-affected areas.
