It’s not uncommon for The Simpsons’ annual “Treehouse of Horror” episode to kill off core characters in horrific ways, like how Homer guns down “Zombie Flanders,” not realizing he was a zombie.
Or the time Groundskeeper Willie died from three bloody axe attacks in one episode.
This year’s “Treehouse of Horror XXXVI” may be the bloodiest yet, with a number of beloved characters meeting grisly fates. At the risk of confusing the internet with more clearly non-canonical deaths, here is a running tally of the Springfieldians who bite the bullet in each segment of tonight’s Halloween show…
The Last Days of Crisco
Chief Wiggum: The town’s top cop is the first victim of the subterranean lard monster known as the “Fatberg” in this ‘70s-set Jaws-Blob mash-up parody. After he’s violently pulled down the train, all that’s left of Wiggum is his hat, donut loyalty card and detached nose.
Üter, Fat Tony, Principal Skinner, Doctor Hibbert, Nelson, Reverend Lovejoy, Lenny, Carl and Mayor Quimby: A ton of recognizable characters are grabbed, and seemingly killed, by the monster during the town’s state fair.
Bart: Bart, who in this reality runs a grease company with Homer (à la Season 10’s “Lard of the Dance”) has the fat sucked out of his body by the vicious beast.
Homer: Moe gets torn in half (yet somehow survives, despite some intestinal leakage), but Homer is devoured by the Fatberg, and ends up killing it.
Patty, Selma, Luanne and Kirk Van Houten and Ralph Wiggum: The wreckage of the state fair is strewn with bloody corpses with familiar faces.
Clown Night with the Devil
Mr. Teeny: During Krusty’s doomed live Halloween special, a possessed Mr. Teeny rips off Sideshow Mel’s face. Mel survives, but the demonic chimp’s head is blown off by a gun-toting crew member.
Ralph: Satan himself, aka “Downstairs God,” pops out of Ralph’s mouth, tossing his lifeless sack of skin into Krusty’s terrified audience.
Üter and Nelson (Again): Most members of the studio audience explode in a torrent of blood, thanks to the Devil. The two most prominent on-screen casualties are Üter and Nelson.
Bart (Again): After it’s revealed that Bart summoned Lucifer to help Krusty’s ratings, he gets dragged to Hell by zombie versions of educational TV stars like Captain Kangaroo.
Plasticworld
Gil Gunderson: In the opening moments of the Waterworld parody “Plasticworld,” Gil is overjoyed to discover a piece of beef jerky — only to be fatally stabbed by a jacked, post-apocalyptic Martin Prince.
Apu and Snake: When Lisa happens upon the ruins of the Kwik-E-Mart, it contains the skeletons of Apu and Snake, who seemingly gunned each other down decades earlier.
Principal Skinner (Again): Skinner is brutally shot in the head by an armored marauder who, surprise surprise, turns out to be Bart.
Martin, Cleetus, Reverend Lovejoy (Again), Chief Wiggum (Again), Homer (Again), Marge, Mr. Largo, Sherri and/or Terri: These are the confirmed deaths following the battle between the plasticized mutants (led by Homer and Marge) and the human survivors including Bart and Lisa — the most memorable death being when plastic Wiggum melts after getting a face full of Flamin’ Hot Cheeto dust.
Bart (For A Third Time), Lisa, All of Humanity: In the end, we learn that Maggie killed off her siblings and the rest of humanity in order to establish a new utopia: Maggieworld.
