Charlie Kelly didn’t self-inflict Saw-level torture during Super Bowl LII just for the New York Giants social media team to use the wrong font in a fake It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia title card.
In 2025, it’s not enough for a professional sports team to rout their division rivals on the field – they have to ratio their enemies as well. Twitter has become a second gridiron for the teams of the National Football League, as media professionals in the employ of every NFL franchise rush to celebrate each win with the perfect GIF, still frame or snarky line that will amass enough likes for the team to declare itself the greatest poster in the division. As arguably the most meme-able and region-specific sitcom in the history of American television, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has fittingly become something of a staple in the NFL’s many meme wars.
Don’t Miss
Earlier this season, when the underdog New York Giants took down the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Meadowlands, the official Giants Twitter account gloated about the win with this Always Sunny-inspired meme:
As fans of both the Eagles and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia rushed to point out, the Giants social media team’s attempt to mock their old enemy using the defining sitcom of the city was, like the Giants roster, poorly constructed — the Giants didn’t even bother to use the correct font when making their Always Sunny meme. Meanwhile, all the Eagles social media team could do was take their lumps that week and wait until the Giants had to come to Philadelphia and play at The Linc in front of a bunch of rabid Philly fans who are all pumped up on Riot Juice.
That opportunity came yesterday, when the Birds beat the breaks off of the Giants in a decisive 38-20 victory. Just seconds after the clock hit zero, the Eagles Twitter team was online and ready to “ruffle some feathers”:
Sadly, yesterday’s game was the last matchup between the Eagles and the Giants until next season, and it seems unlikely that the jabronis from New York will make it to the playoffs where the Eagles would possibly face them for another meme-off en route to a second straight Super Bowl. However, the rest of the teams in the NFC East could pick up where the Giants left off in their own games against Philly – I’m sure that the Dallas Cowboys organization hasn’t forgotten where Mac’s allegiance secretly lies:
