Earlier this month, Cheryl Hines went on The View to promote her new book, Unscripted. Imagine her surprise when the show’s hosts were more focused on what their viewers wanted to hear, rather than what Hines wanted to sell.
“I was actually hoping that it was going to be more personal on The View, but it was what it was,” Hines told Billy Bush on his Hot Mics podcast this week. “They just wanted to grill me about Bobby.”
“Joy Behar’s got to do her thing,” replied Bush.
Don’t Miss
I’m not sure how the rest of Hines’ book tour is going, but was she expecting something else? It’s like when Michael Richards was promoting his memoir, but didn’t want to talk about his tirade at the Laugh Factory. If you’re in the news for something like being married to RFK Jr., don’t you see the questions coming?
Apparently not. “I don’t think the ladies on The View asked me one question about my book,” Hines complained. But again, isn’t the book about her weird romance with RFK Jr.? “In her memoir, she delves into her personal life, revealing the challenges and joys of a blended family with her husband, activist lawyer and 2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,” reads the Amazon description.
Bush couldn’t believe the indignity. “I have read your book every page, every word. And I loved it,” he said.
Folks, this is what real journalism looks like.
Hines’ assertion that no one on The View asked her a direct question about her book is technically true. But Whoopi Goldberg sets it all up at the beginning of the interview, showing a close-up of Hines’ book while telling the audience that “in her new memoir, Unscripted, she reflects on her real life journey from Hollywood to D.C. as the wife of one of the most controversial men in American politics.”
Then Hines is lobbed a softball question — What’s been the hardest part about navigating Washington and the political spotlight? — so she could sell that memoir. “That’s why I called my book Unscripted,” Hines answers, launching into the elevator pitch.
It’s not clear which questions Hines qualifies as grilling. It’s the Curb Your Enthusiasm star who seems to want to stir the pot about RFK Jr., rubbing her hands together like a diabolical genius. “I know you ladies,” she said, an evil grin on her face. “You love to talk about him.”
With the lid off the cauldron, here are some of the “hard-hitting” questions Hines faced:
- “How did you feel about (RFK’s) decision to suspend his campaign and support Trump? And did you share any concerns that you may have had about that?”
- “You know, Cheryl, it’s not fair to really put you on the spot about him because you’re his wife, I know that, but when you say that they are pro-vaccine, it seems as though Bobby and Trump are casting doubt on the efficacy of the vaccine, which makes Americans very nervous.”
The atmosphere grew more strained as RFK Jr.’s qualifications were called into question. Hines also became uncomfortable discussing health topics she wasn’t an expert on. But, if anything, The View hosts handled her with kid gloves, acknowledging that RFK’s views weren’t her fight. Joy Behar finally broke the tension by asking if RFK Jr. really had a brain worm.
“It ate just a little bit of his brain and died, so don’t worry!” Hines joked, covered by a “Shop The Book” QR code hawking the memoir no one asked her about.
