‘SNL’ Fans Try to Guess the Host Who Amy Poehler Says Fell Asleep Mid-Sketch

Saturday Night Live alumna and Good Hang host Amy Poehler claims that one mysterious SNL host from her tenure fell asleep while performing in a sketch, but that still wasn’t as embarrassing as the time he hosted the Oscars with Anne Hathaway.

Of all the horror stories that Saturday Night Live veterans tell about their time at the most stressful workplace in television, no anecdote is more amusing to long-time fans than the terrible host tale. From Milton Berle to Steven Seagal to Elon Musk, the age-old tradition of big-name celebrities stinking up the Studio 8H stage is an inextricable part of SNL history, and a constant point of fascination for fans in a “can’t look away from a car crash” kind of way.

As such, Poehler was cruelly playing with our emotions when she teased a scandalous story about a Saturday Night Live host falling asleep mid-sketch, but declined to identify the dozer-off during a recent Good Hang episode featuring fellow SNL great Kate McKinnon. By refusing to reveal the drowsiest host of her SNL tenure, Poehler denied fans their hot gossip — though she did enable us to engage in some wild, baseless speculation to rival the outlandish claims of a certain sleepy President:

While recounting disastrous SNL dress rehearsals with McKinnon, Poehler told the story of an unnamed SNL host dozing off during the walk-through, saying, “We had a host — again, I wont say who — who, halfway through, just kind of fell asleep a little bit. This was during dress, and I was like, ‘Okay, well, I guess his character is asleep now!’”

However, Poehler added, she doesnt begrudge the unnamed performer his mid-rehearsal nap.

Presumably, Poehler wanted to protect this host from embarrassment when she omitted his name, but she unintentionally opened the door for SNL fans to make all sorts of assumptions about various unpopular hosts, most of whom are, of course, innocent of the siesta scandal. In a thread about Poehlers anecdote on Reddit, one fan guessed of the culprit, “Im thinking of someone who hosted the Oscars with Anne Hathaway.”

“Does their name rhyme with Schmaymes Schmmrankoh?” another user asked, implicating James Franco, who hosted SNL during Poehlers final season in 2008.

Elsewhere, SNL fans aimed a little higher in their accusations, with one user writing in the SNL subreddit, “110% it was Trump. Known sleeper, bad actor, doesnt always read his cue cards, hosted in the last few years.”

However, other SNL fans were doubtful, given Poehlers reticence to reveal the rehearsal sleepers identity. “I feel like if it was Trump, she wouldnt have any problem with saying it was him,” one doubter pointed out.

Following that thinking, Poehler would logically have to have a positive relationship with the person if she didnt want to rag on them publicly, or, at least, a positive impression of them. “Tracy Morgan,” a fan guessed of the sleeper.

“Christoper Walken dozing off mid-Colonel Angus,” another user suggested.

“No shade, but Sir Elton perhaps?” one more SNL fan cautiously offered.

Whoever the host may be, the fandom is united in their frustration that Poehler would offer a juicy bit of gossip while denying fans the best part. “Either name names, or dont bring it up at all,” an SNL fan complained. “There were 100+ hosts during her tenure. It couldve been anybody.”

Well, maybe not anybody — somehow I doubt Jack Black would conk out mid-scene, given how hes the living embodiment of Mountain Dew.
