The world sure could use another Pauly Shore comedy about now, figures Michael Rapaport. “The MTV days are iconic,” he told Bill Maher on the Club Random podcast this week.
“He was Adam Sandler level,” agreed Maher. “But not for too long.”
The two iconoclasts reminisced about the Weasel’s comedy film career, although neither could quite remember the movies’ names. “He had a huge … what were the movies?” wondered Maher. “Like one was an army movie. Going to the Army!” (Actual name: In the Army Now)
Don’t Miss
“Biosphere, wasn’t that one?” he continued. (Actual name: Bio-Dome) “And there’s always hot chicks!”
Hot chicks were just one reason Rapaport and Maher miss stupid comedies. “Like Beavis and Butthead,” said Maher. “And Ted and …”
“Bill and Ted!” offered Rapaport.
Don’t forget Dumb and Dumber, offered Maher, the first comedy whose name he actually got right. “America could not get enough of pairs of dumbass guys.”
Studios should make another Dumb and Dumber right now. “They’re simple! They’re cheap!” argued Rapaport. But there’s one big problem: “They fucked it up. They fucked the R-rated comedy up. The R-rated comedy went out with cancel culture.”
Maher, who rarely misses an opportunity to blame Woke bogeymen for ruining comedy, actually disagreed — at least a little. What about the Naked Gun reboot? And isn’t the vibe different, now that You Know Who is in the White House?
“I don’t think the vibe is different,” argued Rapaport. Maher thinks the Woke era is over? “It ain’t dead. Every little move you make, every step you take, if you screw up, they’ll jump on you.”
Rapaport longs for the days of “all those R-rated comedies, all the Judd comedies, all the Seth Rogen comedies, all the Old School and the Will Ferrell. And they won’t make them.”
Don’t forget the Farrelly brothers, the directors of the only R-rated comedy Maher could accurately name. “Very politically incorrect!” But Peter Farrelly’s Green Book just provides another example of how cancel culture ruins everything. “I think it won the Oscar … and then the Woke shit on it because it was a movie that they would loved five years ago, 10 years ago. They would have come all over it because it’s about racism and has all the right moves, and the Black guy is way smarter than the white guy. It’s like everything you should love as a liberal, but it was directed by a white guy, so it had to be bad.”
What did Maher’s Green Book rant have to do with Dumb and Dumber? Hard to say. Just know that Maher and Rapaport would welcome the return of the R-rated comedy. And if the movie studios need a pair of dumbass guys to do the job, Club Random is just the place to find them.
