The Democrats’ Cringey Twitter Account Gets Rightfully Roasted

This Tuesday’s local elections featured major wins for progressive voters, many of whom are now asking why the official Twitter account for the Democratic Party thinks they have a right to be “LIBBING TF OUT” right now.

Yesterday, in what turned out to be one of the most publicized mayoral elections in American history, 34-year-old Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani defeated disgraced former New York governor Andrew Cuomo and real-life Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Curtis Sliwa to become New York City’s 111th mayor. In his meteoric rise from a virtually unknown state representative to the most powerful leader in the nation’s largest city, Mamdani ran a youth-focused, social-media-friendly campaign that turned him into a Twitter sweetheart among progressives nationwide.

Now, the mainstream Democratic establishment that ignored or even undermined Mamdani wants a bite of that big, viral apple. Unfortunately for the undoubtedly 43-year-old youth consultant in charge of the victory lap on the Democrats’ Twitter account, left-leaning voters and posters weren’t interested in the painfully Millennial-coded meme posts that punctuated yesterday’s electoral success:

As many terminally online Mamdani supporters rushed in to remind the Democrats’ Twitter admin, the party leadership’s reluctance to support New York’s new mayor – or even tweet his name – before he won the general election will not be forgotten just because they recently discovered Knicks memes. Now, as the Democrats gloat about the victory of candidates whom they did not endorse with four-year-old memes that their Republican opponents don’t even understand, the party’s reputation for being painfully out-of-touch and disconnected from the social media generation remains fully intact.

If the Democrats really want to run a meme-based political movement – which, really, they shouldn’t – there has to be some degree of consistency in the messaging. The party’s Twitter account can’t just flip-flop on a candidate they ignored just because he managed to use social media to actually win an election and expect to immediately win over his online following.

After all, the reviled progressive wing of the Democratic Party has proven itself to be much funnier than the entrenched centrists who call the shots (for now). If party leadership still won’t adopt progressive policy stances, the least they can do is allow a leftist to do their shitposting.
