Of all the qualities that audiences have long ascribed to H. Jon Benjamin’s glorious voice, he might be the first person to ever call it “soporific.”
There have never been more tools available to the poor sleepers of the world that don’t require them to put away their phones than there are right now. ASMR videos, white noise apps, 14-hour YouTube meditation playlists, the list goes on and on – hell, there’s even a dedicated community of Frasier fans debating which stretch of episodes has the most soothing high-brow antics for a sophisticated insomniac.
Then, there’s Bob’s Burgers. In a recent cast and crew panel at New York Comic Con, an interviewer from Buzzfeed asked the talent behind the sixteen-seasons-and-counting animated sitcom to opine on why they think Bob’s Burgers continues to be so popular so far into its run, and the series star suggested that the show’s ability to lunch-lull its viewers to sleep could be behind their massive success.
Don’t Miss
And here Hulu thought that Bob’s Burgers fans just loved binge-watching in eight-hour chunks.
While his castmates and colleagues praised the show’s consistently high level of writing, its undying underdog optimism and the genuine warmth of the Belcher family dynamic, Benjamin went in a different direction when describing what made Bob’s Burgers such an enduring hit – “It’s a soporific, I’ve heard it puts people to sleep,” he said.
“Everyone needs to sleep!” Kristen Schaal agreed.
Eugene Mirman chimed in, “It’s the world’s funniest Xanax!”
Although Benjamin and his colleagues were joking around when they suggested Bob’s Burgers as an over-the-internet alternative to insomnia medication, they may be on to something – a cursory Google search brings up dozens of YouTube videos designed to use the sound of Bob’s Burgers episodes to induce sleep in viewers.
There is also a small-but-mighty Reddit community dedicated to the practice of using Bob’s Burgers P.M. to treat insomnia, sporting the cheeky title /r/SleepingWithBob. In the main Bob’s Burgers subreddit, there’s even a popular thread dedicated to picking the perfect Bob’s Burgers episode for falling asleep, with early season bangers like “Broadcast Wagstaff School News,” “My Big Fat Greek Bob” and the entirety of Season Two leading the pack.
Benjamin may not have been serious about Bob’s Burgers being popular for its sleep-inducing properties – and, to be fair, the community of Bob’s Burgers sleepers doesn’t seem to be quite large enough to keep the ratings at uncancelable levels for sixteen seasons – but there really is something about the show that gets the restless sleepers of the fandom comfortable.
Hopefully Bob’s Burgers isn’t causing anyone to sleepwalk – this time of year is a dangerous one for turkeys in the toilet.
