Lily Wachowski is best known for making The Matrix movies. She and her sister, Lana Wachowski, co-wrote and directed the first three films together. The franchise became a huge cultural landmark, with references from the films permeating political discourse decades later..
In a new interview with comedian Caleb Hearon on his podcast So True, Wachowski said that well after the movies came out, she was feeling fatigued with the movie industry. Wachowski transitioned in 2016, and in the years around that time, she was busy making Jupiter Ascending, dealing with her sick parents, and stepping into a new phase of her life. So, in an effort to reconnect with herself, she gave stand up comedy a try.
“After I transitioned, I went through this searching phase where I was not sure I wanted to be in the movie business anymore and I started—I struck on this idea to do standup comedy,” Wachowski explained to Hearon.
Don’t Miss
“I didn’t know this, but I’m loving it,” Hearon replied.
This wasn’t a totally out of the blue decision for Wachowski.
“I took comedy classes when I was in college and I liked it,” the Matrix director explained. “And I thought it was like… I think it was like part and parcel of like the trans experience where you have to um you know build up that uh callous of being out in the public. And so, I started doing this.”
Ultimately though, comedy wasn’t Wachowski’s next creative home. Instead, she started painting with her mother, whose health was declining. “I was still not sure what I wanted to do. I was painting at that point. I left comedy for a second time and I started painting,” Wachowski said.
“I started painting with my mom who’s a painter, going to her art class, and then when she couldn’t do that anymore, I would go and just bring her to the studio and we I would paint with her and my aunt and we’d have this like uh fun like Thursday where we’d just paint all day. I started, it started sparking something for me as an artist again. And I began to enjoy creating.”
While comedy didn’t end up being the creative spark for Wachowski, it was part of the path that led to making more television. She ended up meeting Work in Progress co-creator Abby McEnany through the Chicago comedy scene. Wachowski ultimately became a writer, executive producer, and director for drama-comedy series which aired on Showtime.
Working on a TV show definitely is the best possible outcome of testing out stand up comedy and realizing you prefer painting.
