The series of preparation games ahead of the European Championships in Belgrade has begun in Paris, where France hosted Hungary.

Each team scored 17 goals in regular time, and Hungary ultimately triumphed in a penalty shootout, 22:21 (4:3, 5:5, 4:3, 4:6, PSO 5:4).

Hungary competed with a rejuvenated roster. Absences included Krisztan Manhercz, Szilard Jansik, Daniel Angyal, Soma Vogel, etc. Meanwhile, Dome Dala, Bendeguz Ekler, and Henrik Simon made their debuts for the Hungarian team, while Adam Nagy served as captain. There were a few new names on France’s roster, too.

Vjekoslav Kobescak debuted as France’s head coach in this match.

There were a lot of turns in the first half. Hungary took control late in the third period, building a 13:11 lead. In the fourth quarter, the visitors increased the margin to three – 14:11. However, France came back and took the lead – 17:16 in the final minute. Adam Nagy leveled at 17:17 with two seconds remaining on the clock. After five rounds of penalty shots, Hungary claimed a narrow 22:21 win.

Vendel Vigvari was Hungary’s best scorer with five goals (including the shootout), Adam Nagy and Akos Nagy added four each. Alexandre Bouet led France with eight goals.

Most of the best European men’s national teams have begun their preparations for the continental championships in Belgrade. The Italians will gather only next week, because Serie A1 is still ongoing. The first half of the Italian League will conclude on Saturday with the 13th round, and the 12th-round matches have been played over three days (Monday – Wednesday).

The visiting teams were quite successful.

Pro Recco and Brescia achieved convincing wins. Pro Recco beat Olympic Roma 18:6 in the capital with four goals from Rino Buric and three from Giacomo Cannella.

Brescia hosted Trieste in the derby of the round. However, Brescia left no chance to the visitors. Trieste kept up with the Champions League club for more than a quarter. In the 10th minute, Trieste trailed 3:4. Brescia then produced a 6:0 run in less than four minutes for a comfortable 10:3 lead. The hosts maintained the difference until the end. Vincenzo Dolce and Alessandro Balzarini contributed four goals each to Brescia’s 17:10 victory.  Brescia’s goalkeeper, Tommaso Baggi Necchi, performed well. He saved two penalty shots.

Savona beat Telmar 18:13. The Sicilians fought hard, even though they never took the lead. At the first break, the teams were tied at 4:4. A neck-and-neck race continued until the middle of the third period, when Telimar trailed 10:11. Savona, with unstoppable Oliver Leinweber, who scored 7 times, controlled the match in the final 12 minutes.

An encounter between Roma Vis Nova and Canottieri, played in Rome, was quite interesting. Roma Vis Nova had a 3-goal advantage at halftime (6:3). Canottieri ruled the field in the third period and entered the fourth quarter leading 8:6. The hosts halved their deficit twice during the final period. Still, Canottieri collected all three points with a 10:8 win.

De Akker defeated Salerno 15:9 at home. Salerno had a 5:3 and 6:4 lead in the first half. Then, De Akker took control and, led by Balazs Erdelyi (who scored five goals in the game), went on a stunning 7:0 run, which put the hosts on the right track.

Posillipo earned an away victory over Ortigia, 17:14. The Naples-based side built an 11:6 lead in the first half. However, the Sicilians didn’t surrender. Ortigia cut the deficit early in the fourth period (13:14), but Posillipo replied with three straight goals and secured the victory.

An encounter between Posillipo and Savona, played in Naples this afternoon, was the 11th-round derby of the Italian League. However, the big match of the weekend lacked excitement.

Savona blew Posillipo away- 15:6. Posillipo scored two goals in the first two minutes, taking a 2:1 lead. However, in the following sixteen minutes, Posillipo had no answer to Savona’s strong defense, commanded by Marco Del Lungo. The visitors produced an 8:0 run and built a 9:2 lead early in the third quarter. Savona continued to dominate, ultimately widening the margin to nine goals. Young Hungarian Oliver Leinweber shone for Savona, scoring five goals, while teammates Figlioli and Occhione contributed three goals each.

With this victory, Savona, in third place, is seven points ahead of fourth-placed Posillipo.

The Champions League clubs prolonged their winning streaks with very convincing victories. Pro Recco was dominant against Roma Vis Nova, 25:9. Francesco Di Fulvio and Giacomo Cannella scored five goals each. Brescia beat Salerno by 10 goals, 19:9, with four goals from Vincenzo Dolce and Mario Del Basso.

All other matches were close contests.

Trieste water polo players didn’t recover after their defeat to Szolnok, which eliminated them from the Euro Cup. They faced another setback, losing at home to Olympic Roma. Early in the third quarter, Olympic Roma held a comfortable four-goal lead, 7:3. Throughout the second half, Trieste fought hard and managed to close the gap to just one goal several times, but was unable to equalize. Olympic Roma recorded an 11:10 victory and climbed to sixth place, with just one point behind Trieste.

Florentia earned its first points in the season with a 9:8 away victory over Telimar. The Palermo-based team opened the match with a 3:0 lead. The visitors leveled at 3:3 before the end of the first half. Still, Florentia went ahead for the first time only 03:10 minutes before the final buzzer, when Benvenuti made it 9:8, which was the last goal in the match.
The other Sicilian club, Ortigia, also experienced a narrow loss. Canottieri beat Ortigia 11:10. The finish of this game, played in Naples, was similar to the one in Palermo. Canottieri scored a winning goal in the 29th minute. In the rest of the match, defenses were strong and nobody found the net.

Iren Genova Quinto secured two points, defeating De Akker in a penalty shootout – 16:13 (12:12).

A round before the end of the Euro Cup Group Stage, almost all eighth-final berths have been allocated.

Jug and Savona qualified two weeks ago. This evening, Terrassa, Barcelona, Szolnok, and Sabac joined them with wins in the 5th round.

Everything is open in Group C, where the trend of a penalty shootout continued. Panathinaikos defeated BVSC in Athens after a shootout, 21:18. Vouliagmeni leads this group with 11 points, BVSC has 10, and Panathinaikos 9.

One of the fifth-round derbies was between Sabac and Savona in Group D. Sabac, the home team, qualified for the Round of 16 with a 13:9 victory, while Savona maintained the top spot in the group.

The remaining three teams that earned the eighth-finals berths with this evening’s wins achieved away victories. In Group A, Terrassa defeated Solaris 18:15. In Group B, Szolnok triumphed over Trieste 15:12, and Barcelona won against Dinamo, finishing 19:10.

As in the Champions League, the matches of 6th round will take place in February.

However, Barcelona replied with a 6:2 run and built a five-goal lead in the middle of the third quarter, 11:6 and there was no way back for Dinamo.

After Barcelona, Szolnok secured the ticket for the eighth finals with a 15:12 over Trieste in a derby match. In the first half of an even contest, Trieste held the lead for most of the time, while Szolnok chased the hosts. In the 14th minute, the Hungarians went ahead for the first time, when Kovacs converted a penalty for 7:6. Trieste’s best scorer, Draskovic, leveled immediately. Vouliagmeni returned to the winning track with a convincing victory over Buducnost. However, the Montenegrins kept up with the favorite for more than two quarters. Early in the third period, Buducnost equalized at 7:7. But, Vouliagmeni answered with four goals within less than two minutes to jump to 11:7 and continued dominating until the end.

The second match played in Greece this evening was a real thriller, filled with goals and exclusions. The encounter between Panathinaikos and BVSC had numerous twists and turns. Two goals separated the rivals only twice. The Hungarian side was the first one that took a 2-goal lead late in the second quarter, scoring to make it 8:6. However, Panathinaikos performed slightly better in the third period, and went ahead again in the 22nd minute – 12:11. The teams then exchanged goals until the end of the quarter, leaving them tied at 14:14 at the last break.

Panathinaikos managed to earn a 2-goal advantage (16:14) midway through the final quarter. Then BVSC took control, scoring three straight goals. Just 51 seconds before the end, Ekler put the visitors in front, 17:16. But, Gkiouvetsis converted a man-up with 15 seconds remaining, leveled at 17:17, and for the fourth time this season, a penalty shootout decided the winner in a match in Group C (Vouliagmeni was involved in the previous three games). BVSC scored only once in a shootout.

However, BVSC kept a realistic chance of advancing with one point taken in Athens, because it will host Buducnost in the last round. The Greek battle, Vouliagmeni – Panathinaikos, will decide the second eighth-finalists in this group.

Standings: 1. Vouliagmeni 11, 2. BVSC 10, 3. Panathinaikos 9, 4. Buducnost 0.

GROUP D

Spandau 04 – Steaua 13:10 (4:4, 3:1, 2:2, 4:3)

Spandau 04: Kojic 4, Hofmann 2, Nagy 2, Sekulic 2, Bauer 1, Vujicic 1, Chiru 1.

Steaua: Georgescu 3, Vucinic 2, Iudean 2, Bota 1, Neamtu 1, Tepelus 1.

Savona: Bruni 2, Occhione 2, Damonte 2, Rizzo 1, Condemi 1, Cora 1.

Spandau was ahead of Steaua for most of the match in Berlin. Midway through the second quarter, the home team went on a crucial 3:0 run. The Germans scored three goals in just two and a half minutes, jumping from a tie of 4:4 to a lead of 7:4. For the remainder of the game, Steaua managed to narrow the gap to two goals several times, but it could not get any closer. With this victory, Spandau kept its chances of advancing to the Round of 16 alive. However, these chances lasted for only an hour, until the end of the match in Sabac.

By defeating Savona, Sabac advanced to the Top 16 round and caught up with Savona in points. However, the Italian team shouldn’t be too disappointed. Savona still holds a better head-to-head record against Sabac, thanks to a 17:12 win in Italy. In the final round, Savona will host Steaua, while Sabac will travel to Berlin, making it likely that the Italians will maintain 1st place.

Sabac got off to an excellent start in the game against Savona. The Serbs quickly earned a 2:0 lead. At the first break, they were 4:1 up. Savona, which arrived with only 12 players, fought back and leveled at 4:4 in the 14th minute. Sabac was without a goal for six minutes. Still, the hosts’ Kovacevic and Barac managed to find the net at the end of the first half, giving their team a 6:4 lead before the second half.

Savona halved its deficit to 5:6 and 6:7, but then came Sabac’s 4:0 run. The hosts went to 11:6 and were very close to overcoming a 5-goal deficit from the game in Savona. Between the 21st and 25th minutes, Savona played with a man-down because Leinweber was red-carded for a violent foul committed while Sabac was leading 9:6. However, the visitors reduced the gap in the fourth quarter to 8:11. Sabac built a 4-goal lead twice (12:8 and 13:9), but the Italians avoided a big defeat.

Standings: 1. Savona 12, 2. Sabac 12, 3. Spandau 6, 4. Steaua 0.

Radnicki secured a valuable 14:11 victory over Mladost in the highly anticipated derby of the fifth round of Champions League Group A, keeping its hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals alive.

Mladost began strong, leading 4:0 at the first break and 7:3 at halftime. However, Radnicki recovered, finishing the last 10 minutes with a decisive 6:0 run to secure the win.

In another match in this group, Olympiacos convincingly defeated Vasas 20:8, maintaining the top spot with 12 points. Both Radnicki and Mladost have nine points each, but none of the three teams has yet secured a place among the top eight in this season’s Champions League. A vital game is set for February, when Olympiacos will face Radnicki in Piraeus. The Greek team has the best chances of advancing, needing only to avoid a heavy loss to Radnicki.

In Group D, the series of unexpected results continued, with Waspo Hannover defeating Sabadell 11:9 in Spain. The Germans are now in second place, three points ahead of Marseille, making the race for the second available quarterfinal berth in this group wide open. Barceloneta has already qualified for the next stage, while Sabadell has been eliminated with this loss.

Pro Recco triumphed over Jadran Herceg Novi in a high-scoring match in Trebinje, winning 19:13 and confirming its top position in Group B. Jadran remains in contention for a place in the Top 8.

A round before the Group Stage, only four teams qualified for the Quarter Final Stage: Pro Recco, Ferencvaros, Brescia, and Barceloneta; while five are eliminated to the Euro Cup: Vasas, Jadran Split, Oradea, Primorac, and Sabadell.

The remaining seven clubs are still in the race.

2026 Champions League, Group Stage, Round 5

GROUP A

Radnicki – Mladost 14:11 (0:4, 3:3, 6:4, 4:0)

Radnicki: Prlainovic 5, Vlachopoulos 4, S. Rasovic 2, Vapenski 2, Pijetlovic 1.

Mladost: Kharkov 2, Lazic 2, Basic 1, Tonicic 1,Buljubasic 1, Biljaka 1, Bukic 1, Nagaev 1, Loncar 1.

The way the game in Kragujevac started indicated that Radnicki would say goodbye to the Top 8 round this evening, and that Mladost would secure a place in the next round.

Radnicki has struggled with poor power-play conversions throughout many matches this season, and this trend continued in the first half against Mladost. The hosts had four 6-on-5 opportunities in the first quarter but failed to score. Mladost’s defense was excellent, and their offense was equally impressive, as the visitors netted three action goals and one from a power play within the first eight minutes. Strahinja Rasovic finally put Radnicki on the scoreboard in the 10th minute. For the remainder of the first half, the teams exchanged goals, leaving Mladost with a solid 7:4 lead at the midway point.

The home side began to mount a comeback during the third period. In the 19th minute, Pijetlovic scored from a counterattack, narrowing Radnicki’s deficit to two goals for the first time (6:8). Three minutes later, Radnicki came even closer when Andrija Prlainovic converted a penalty shot, bringing the score to 8:9. However, Konstantin Kharkov quickly responded with a goal during a man-up situation, marking Mladost’s 10th goal of the game. Kharkov became the first player from the visiting team to score multiple goals, highlighting the visitors’ control of the match through a strong team effort. Lazic followed with a goal for 11:8. At that point, the game shifted direction. Radnicki tightened its defense and capitalized on man-up opportunities, resulting in a crucial 6:0 run. Just before the last break, the Serbian champion closed the gap to one goal again (10:11) and even had a chance to equalize with a man-up situation in the dying seconds of the quarter, but they missed the opportunity. Mladost entered the final period with a narrow advantage.

The equalizer came in the 26th minute when Prlainovic scored from a penalty following a foul against him. A minute later, Radnicki’s experienced captain put his team ahead with an extra player – 12:11. Vlachopoulos then added another goal during a 6-on-5 situation, extending the lead to 13:11.

After that, neither team was able to score for a long time. In the last minute, Mladost opted to attack with seven outfield players, but that strategy did not yield results. Radnicki’s goalkeeper, Radoslav Filipovic, saved a shot from Franko Lazic. Radnicki then failed to score from two long-distance attempts while Mladost was without a goalkeeper. However, Vlachopoulos capitalized on the opportunity. He sealed  Radnicki’s victory and completed the 6:0 run with just two seconds remaining.

Olympiacos – Vasas 20:8 (6:1, 4:2, 6:1, 4:4)

Olympiacos: Kakaris 4, Nikolaidis 3, Zalanki 3, Genidounias 2, Angyal 2, Papanastasiou 2, Gkillas 1, Pouros 1, Dimou 1, Fountoulis 1.

Vasas: Gabor 2, Djurdjic 2, Szalai 1, Dala 1, Foskolos 1, Batori 1.

Olympiacos had an excellent percentage of shots – 6/9 in the first period and built a 6:0 lead after just six and a half minutes of play. Foskolos scored the first goal for Vasas by converting a man-up just 15 seconds before the first break. Olympiacos’ explosive start set the tone of the match. At halftime, seven goals separated the rivals (10:3).

The Greeks continued playing at a high pace. Midway through the third quarter, Olympiacos reached a double-digit margin, when Genidounias scored 14:4 from a counterattack. Olympiacos’ biggest lead was 13 goals (18:5) early in the fourth period, and after that, the hosts took a break.

Standings: 1. Olympiacos 12, 2. Radnicki 9, 3. Mladost 9, 4. Vasas 0.

Head to head: Radnicki – Mladost 15:17 and 14:11

GROUP B

Jadran HN – Pro Recco 13:19  (3:3, 2:6, 2:6, 6:4)

Jadran Herceg Novi: Lazic 3, Vujovic 2, Valera 2, Kholod 1, Stupar 1, Merkulov 1, Gojkovic 1, Janovic 1.

Pro Recco: Irving 5, Cannella 4, Iocchi Gratta 3, Patchaliev 2, Durik 2, Di Fulvio 1, Granados 1, Buric 1.

Pro Recco started breaking Jadran’s resistance in the second quarter. In the first period, the Italians took a one-goal lead three times, and Jadran leveled on each occasion. Still, Recco ruled the field in the second period. The visitors scored three straight goals in less than two minutes and jumped to 6:3. Kholod broke their series for 4:6. Still, Max Irving responded with two goals and stretched the margin to four (8:4).

Late into the third quarter, Pro Recco built a nine-goal lead (15:6). However, the Italian champions didn’t chase a goal difference and slowed down in the final quarter.  They used the last eight minutes to try out some tactical variations. Recco had seven outfield players in its final two possessions. It didn’t score, but Lazar Andric, Jadran’s goalkeeper, seized an opportunity and set the final score, sending the ball into the empty net with 16 seconds remaining on the clock.

Recco confirmed the top spot, and Jadran waits a do-or-die match against Novi Beograd in the 6th round.

Standings: 1. Pro Recco 15, 2. Jadran HN 6, 3. Novi Beograd 6, 4. Jadran S 3.

Head to head: Jadran HN – Novi Beograd 12:11

GROUP D

Sabadell – Waspo 98 Hannover 9:11 (5:3, 1:2, 1:3, 2:3)

Sabadell: Famera 2, Cabanas 2, Averka 2, Asensio 1, Varroso 1, Saboya 1.

Waspo 98: Vukicevic 3, Bozic 2, Schipper 1, Langiewicz 1, Kueppers 1, Strelezkij 1, Milradovic 1, Gansen 1.

Waspo Hannover rose to 2nd place after winning in Sabadell, demonstrating that the Germans’ victories over Sabadell and Marseille in their pool were not solely due to the favorites’ poor performance.

This evening’s game was an even contest for most of the first quarter. Still,  the hosts earned a 5:3 goal with two back-to-back goals in the final 39 seconds of the first period. The Spaniards held back Hannover’s comeback attempts during the second period. The visitors halved the deficit by the middle break (5:6) and took control in the second half. B

Bozic leveled at 6:6 in the 16th minute. After that goal, Sabadell forced two exclusions and had a double man-up. While both excluded players were still off the field, Hannover’s Kacper Langiewicz received a red card (exclusion with substitution). But, Sabadell didn’t capitalize on a 6-on-3 situation – Hannover’s goalkeeper Spittnak saved a shot from Cabanas. That moment was a turning point. The Germans scored in their subsequent two attacks and took an 8:6 lead. Sabadell didn’t equalize in the rest of the match, even though it came close a few times (7:8 and 8:9).

Gansen gave Hannover an 11:8 lead with 05:11 remaining on the clock. There was still enough time for a new turn, but the visitors were calmer in the final minutes. They focused on defense, allowing Sabadell to score only one goal.

Both matches in the 6th round of Group D will take place in Spain. Sabadell will host Marseille, while Barceloneta will welcome Waspo Hannover. The hosts have little to gain or lose in these games. Barceloneta will not hold onto the top position if they suffer a 17-goal defeat against Hannover. Additionally, Sabadell cannot qualify for the next stage. Currently, there are three points separating 2nd-placed Hannover and 3rd-placed Marseille. The Germans will advance if they earn at least one point against Barceloneta or if Marseille doesn’t earn all three points in Sabadelll This makes for a very interesting situation.

Standings: 1. Barceloneta 12, 2. Hannover 9, 3. Marseille 6, 4. Sabadell 3.

Brescia and Barceloneta had a great evening in the fifth week of the 2026 Champions League. Today, both teams secured away victories, earning spots in the Quarter Final Round.

Brescia pulled off a significant upset by defeating Ferencvaros in Budapest after a penalty shootout, which ended 16:13 (12:12). Remarkably, Brescia had already mathematically qualified for the Top 8 Round even before the match in Budapest. Earlier in Group C, Primorac defeated Oradea 15:11, confirming Brescia’s spot in the Quarter Finals. While the Italian team achieved an impressive feat, it won’t help Brescia move from its 2nd place in the group. Ferencvaros will probably remain at the top of the standings despite the surprising loss, because it will face Primorac in Round 6..

Barceloneta trailed by three goals for most of the match against Marseille in France. However, the Spaniards produced a late 4:0 surge and recorded a 12:11 victory. Barceloneta qualified for the Quarter Final Stage and practically secured 1st place in Group D.

Novi Beograd beat Jadran Split 15:11 in Group B. The match remained open until the fourth quarter, when Novi Beograd pulled away (6:1). This victory is an encouragement for the Serbian team ahead of the crucial group match against Jadran Herceg Novi in Trebinje. The winner of that game will advance from this group to the next stage, along with Pro Recco.

2025/26 Champions League, Group Stage, Round 5

GROUP B

Novi Beograd – Jadran 15:10 (2:4, 3:3, 4:2, 6:1)

Novi Beograd: Cuk 4, Perkovic 4, Martinovic 3, Trtovic 2, Dimitrijevic 1, Lukic 1.

Jadran Split: Berehulak 4, Marinic Kragic 2, Butic 2, Fatovic 1, Curkovic 1.

Novi Beograd maintained a perfect record against Jadran Split in the Champions League. This evening’s match marked the eighth encounter between the two teams in elite competitions, resulting in Novi Beograd’s eighth consecutive victory.

However, the Serbian club didn’t make a big step towards the Quarter Final Round, as it still has to beat Jadran Herceg Novi in February. As for the Split-based team, it lost its last chance to qualify for the next stage.

Novi Beograd had a 2:1 lead in the middle of the first period. However, Jadran, playing without its first goalkeeper Marko Bijac (with Celar as the only goalie on the roster), took control of the game. The Croats went on a 4:0 scoring run, primarily benefiting from excellent man-up shot conversions, which gave them a 5:2 lead early in the second quarter. Novi Beograd managed to close the gap, making the score 3:5 and later 4:6.Thirty seconds before the end of the quarter, Jadran gained a three-goal lead for the third time, when Butic converted a penalty shot for 7:4. But, Milos Cuk replied with a power-play goal.

Miroslav Perkovic Photo by VK Novi Beograd

Novi Beograd chased Jadran, but the visitors kept a 2-goal lead until the 21st minute, when Jerko Marinic Kragic scored from a 6 on 5 for 9:7. After that, Novi Beograd went on a 4:0 run, which was crucial for the outcome. Milos Cuk leveled at 9:9. In the rest of the third quarter, Novi Beograd didn’t score, but managed to kill two Jadran’s man-downs and the fourth quarter was a new beginning. Nobody had an advantage before the final eight minutes.

The Serbs kept momentum and converted two man-ups in the first two minutes of the final period to go to 11:9. Berehulak ended that series, but not for long. Novi Beograd, led by Miroslav Perkovic, who scored four goals and forced eight exclusions, and Milos Cuk dominated in the last several minutes.

Standings: 1. Pro Recco 12 (4 games), 2. Jadran HN 6 (2), 3. Novi Beograd 6, 4. Jadran S 3.

GROUP C

Ferencvaros – Brescia 13:16 (1:0, 5:8, 3:2, 3:2, PSO 1:4)

Ferencvaros:  Manhercz 3, Di Somma 3, Argyropoulos 2, Vamos 2, Varga 1,Mandic 1, Jansik 1.

Brescia: Dolce 4, Popadic 3, Vskovic 3, Del basso 2, Ferrero 1, Gianazza 1, Giri 1, Balzarini 1.

The match in Budapest started two hours after the game in Kotor, so Brescia water polo jumped into the pool knowing they definitely qualified for the Quarter Final Stage. Encouraged by that fact, the Italians played a good match, while Ferencvaros suffered its first Champions League defeat since April 1, when Barceloneta beat the title-holders in a penalty shootout, as Brescia did this evening.

Dolce (BRE) and Vigvari (FTC) Photo by Laszlo Balogh

Ferencvaros’ defense has been vulnerable in nearly all Champions League matches this season. The opening quarter suggested that the reigning champions had improved this aspect of their play, but Brescia’s defense was strong as well. The only one who scored in the first period was Szilard Jansik in the 6th minute. After a defensive first quarter, nobody could expect 13 goals in the following eight minutes. Viskovic scored the first goal for Brescia in the 9th minute, and a scoring festival started. Brescia took the lead for the first time just 40 seconds before halftime. Popadic made it 7:6. Ferencvaros didn’t find the net in the following possession, but Dolce doubled Brescia’s advantage in the very last second of the first half.

Brescia went to 9:6 in the 19th minute, and Ferencvaros managed to come close, trailing 9:10 after the third period. The hosts leveled the score twice in the fourth quarter at 11:11 and 12:12. Manhercz’s equalizer in the 31st minute was the last goal in regular time, and the match was prolonged to a penalty shootout. Mandic was the only one who scored for Ferencvaros in a shootout, and two points went to Brescia.

Primorac: Mrsic 4, S. Cetkovic 3, Vuckovic 3,  Brguljan 1, Murisic 1, Vidovic 1, Vico 1, Stanojevic 1.

Oradea: Gardasevic 5, Ilisie 1, Vancsik 2, Velkic 2, Czenk 1

Primorac earned its first Champions League points this season, killing Oradea’s last, very slim chances of advancing to the Top 8 round. The Kotor-based team and Oradea are tied in points, but Primorac didn’t overcome a 7-goal deficit from a 7:14 loss in Oradea, and it will probably stay at the bottom of the table.

Ilsie (ORA) and Vidovic (PRI) Photo by Filip Roganovic

Primorac created more scoring chances and played very actively in attack, and demonstrated strong pressing in defense. It dominated in the opening minutes, despite not having an excellent shot percentage. The home team led 2:0, 4:1 and 6:2 in the first half. But Oradea tightened its defense, allowing it to get back into the match.

Primorac had a 3-goal advantage 30 seconds before the middle break (7:4). Oradea’s Gardasevic closed the first half to make it 5:7. Oradea’s centre-forward opened the third period with two goals, and Oradea caught up with the Montenegrins in the 19th minute – 7:7. However, Primorac retook control in the middle of the third quarter. Mrsic scored for 8:7. Vico made it 9:7 from a rebound, and Vidovic gave the Montenegrins a 10:7 lead less than two minutes before the last break. Oradea couldn’t produce another comeback.

Standings: 1. Ferencvaros 13, 2. Brescia 11, 3. Oradea 3, 4. Primorac 3.

GROUP D

Marseille – Barceloneta 11:12 (4:1, 4:4, 2:3, 1:4)

Marseille:Bouet 4, Vernoux 2, Kalogeropoulos 2, Larumbe 1, Drasovic 1, Marion Vernoux 1.

Barceloneta: Echenique 3, Vigvari 3, Sanahuja 2, Biel 2, Valls 1, Burian 1.

Barceloneta earned three points in Marseille, avenging a previous defeat by the same score against the French champion. For most of the match, Marseille set the pace and held a 3-goal lead. However, Barceloneta stepped up when it mattered most, securing the victory and advancing to the Top 8 round with a 4:0 run in the fourth quarter.

Barceloneta took three points in Marseille and avenged a defeat with the same score against the French champion in France. Marseille dictated the pace for most of the match, and had a 3-goal lead early in the fourth period. Barceloneta did its best when it mattered the most and secured the win and the Top 8 round with a 4:0 series in the fourth quarter.

Marseille controlled Barceloneta in the first quarter. The Spaniards’ attacks were harmless for a long time. Thomas Vernoux scored the first two goals in the game, Bouet added one, and the hosts had a 3:0 lead in the 6th minute. Barceloneta got on the scoreboard only 01:38 minutes before the first break, when leftie Gonzalo Echenique found the net. However, just a minute later, Bouet replied – 4:1.

Barceloneta improved its offensive play in the second quarter. It was enough to narrow the gap to two goals thrice (2:4, 3:5, 4:6). But Marseille had control, and earned a 4-goal lead in the 16th minute – 8:4. Sanahuja netted for 5:8 with 27 seconds before the middle break.

Unai Aguirre Photo by Laszlo Balogh

There was a long break between the 2nd and 3rd periods due to a technical problem at the pool in Marseille. That pause obviously suited Barceloneta, which started coming back in the second half. Goalkeeper Unai Aguirre was one of the heroes of the win, he posted one save after another; the attack began working better. In the 20th minute, Valls closed the gap to one goal (8:9). In the following minutes, both defenses were up to the task, and the next goal came only three seconds before the last break, when former Barceloneta player, Marc Larumbe, gave Marseille a 10:8 lead.

Early in the fourth period, Marseille regained a 3-goal lead (11:8). However, Barceloneta scored four unanswered goals within two and a half minutes, taking their first lead of the match. Burian scored to make it 12-11 with just 2 minutes and 11 seconds remaining on the clock. This turned out to be the final score. Marseille failed to convert a penalty with 15 seconds left, missing its last opportunity to equalize. After suffering their third consecutive loss, Marseille faces significant challenges heading into its final Group stage match against Sabadell in Spain.

Standings: 1. Barceloneta 12, 2. Marseille 6, 3. Hannover 6 (2 games), 4. Sabadell 3 (2).

The series of international water polo games in 2025 will conclude this week, with the 5th rounds of the Champions League Group Stage and the Euro Cup Group Stage.

The two competitions will continue in February after the European Championships in Belgrade.

Two weeks ago, after the Champions League Round 4, two teams qualified for the Quarter Final Stage – Ferencvaros and Pro Recco, both of which continued their winning streaks. Only two teams lost their last chance to advance among the best eight teams – Vasas and Primorac.

The remaining 12 clubs are still in the competition for the quarterfinals, and most of them have realistic chances to qualify, so there will be several exciting games in the remaining two rounds.

This week, several teams have the opportunity to join Pro Recco and Ferencvaros in the Top 8 stage.

Like in the previous four rounds, one of the highlights of the week will be an encounter in the “group of death”- in Group A. In the fifth round, it is a clash between Radnicki and Mladost in Kragujevac.

The other game attracting great attention is the Group D match, where Marseille hosts Barceloneta.

The games in groups B and C are in the shadows of the other clashes this week, even though a derby between Novi Beograd and Jadran is on the schedule in Group B. Only big surprises in these groups will impact the battle for the Quarter Final Stage berths.

2025/26 Champions League, Round 5, Preview

GROUP A

Wednesday, December 3: Radnicki – Mladost at 20:30, Olympiacos – Vasas at 20:30

After two consecutive losses to Mladost and Olympiacos, Radnicki cannot afford to lose any more points in Group A. But an overture before the game with Mladost wasn’t good. Last weekend, Radnicki was narrowly defeated by Novi Beograd in the Serbian Cup semifinals.

Mladost has gained significant momentum this season. The Zagreb-based team has suffered only one defeat, which was against Olympiacos in Piraeus. On Saturday, Mladost triumphed in the Croatian Cup, securing its first trophy in four and a half years. This success has further boosted the team’s self-confidence ahead of their match in Kragujevac.

Andrija Basic (Mladost) and Viktor Rasovic (Radnicki) Photo by Tom Franic/HAVK Mladost

For the first time this Champions League season, Radnicki will have all its players available for the match, as Serbia’s captain, Nikola Jaksic, has recovered from his injury. However, Radnicki’s performance in the Serbian Cup semifinals was not promising. Nevertheless, the Serbian champions can learn from their mistakes in that match, and with the support of their fans, they hope to keep their chances of reaching the Quarter Final Stage alive.

Olympiacos missed its first opportunity to qualify for the top eight teams by losing to Mladost. This week, the Greeks have a great chance to secure their place in the next phase. They are heavy favorites going into their match against Vasas, a team they defeated by ten goals in Budapest. While Vasas is stuck at the bottom of the table, the Hungarian will likely be motivated to challenge the favorites.

Standings: 1. Olympiacos 9, 2. Mladost 9, 3. Radnicki 6, 4. Vasas 0.

GROUP B

Tuesday, December 2: Novi Beograd – Jadran Split at 20:30, Wednesday, December 3: Jadran Herceg Novi – Pro Recco at 20:30.

The two finalists of the national cups in Serbia and Croatia will face off in the derby in Group B.

Novi Beograd ended a 4-game losing streak by beating Radnicki and Sabac and won the Serbian Cup. Jadran Split convincingly lost to Mladost in the Croatian Cup final. The game in Belgrade is important, but it isn’t crucial.

Supposing that Pro Recco will finish the group stage with a perfect record, beating both Jadrans in the last two matches, the result of the encounter between Novi Beograd,, which restructured its coaching staff, and Jadran Split won’t significantly impact the standings.

A victory over Jadran Split will mean nothing for Novi Beograd unless the Serbs also defeat Jadran Herceg Novi in their away match in the sixth round. Therefore, the game in Trebinje is essential for the Serbs. That won’t change even if the Croatian champion beats them by a small margin. On the other hand, Jadran Split, which suffered a 3-goal loss to Novi Beograd at home, must meet several conditions to advance to the Top 8 round.

Pro Recco’s coaching staff Photo by Federico Schenone

As for Pro Recco, the Euro Cup winners will not maintain their position at the top of the group if they fail to earn any points in their next two games and lose to Jadran Herceg Novi by ten goals or more on Wednesday. This scenario seems very unlikely. Pro Recco will play for pride and aim to extend its winning streak.

Nevertheless, favorites can occasionally have an off day. Only one unexpected outcome could complicate the situation in the group.

Standings: 1. Pro Recco 12, 2. Jadran Herceg Novi 6, 3. Novi Beograd 3, 4. Jadran Split 3.

GROUP C

Tuesday, December 2: Primorac – Oradea  at 18:30, Ferencvaros – Brescia  at 20:30.

Everything is relatively clear in Group C.

Ferencvaros doesn’t need to beat Brescia tomorrow to cement first place before the last round. The Hungarians only have to avoid a defeat by a margin of four goals to clinch the top spot mathematically. Considering that the reigning champions has improved week by week, it’s hard to believe they will allow themselves to drop any points, especially at home. While Brescia has also performed well, a win for the Italians would be a significant surprise.

Primorac welcomes Oradea, aiming to avenge a 7-goal defeat in Romania. Oradea still has a slim chance to reach the quarterfinals. It will remain in the race if it takes three points in Kotor and Ferencvaros defeats Brescia. If both tomorrow’s results go in the Romanians’ favour, they will still have a challenging task ahead of them, as they will need to beat Brescia in Italy by six goals or more.

Likely, the standings will not change here until the end of the Group Stage.

Standings: 1. Ferencvaros 12, 2. Brescia 9, 3. Oradea 3, 4. Primorac 0.

GROUP D

Tuesday, December 2: Marseille – Barceloneta at 20:30, Wednesday, December 3: Sabadell – Waspo 98 Hannover at 18:30.

Three surprising results – Waspo Hannover’s home wins over Sabadell and Marseille, and Sabadell’s victory in Marseille – made the competition in Group D very interesting. All four teams can qualify for the Top 8 round.

Barceloneta is in a very good position. The other Spanish team, Sabadell, got back into the race for the next phase with the win in Spain.

Even if Barceloneta loses to Marseille in tomorrow’s derby, it will still be very close to advancing to the Quarter Final Stage, as it will host Hannover in Round 6. The Spanish champion is much stronger than the Germans, as demonstrated by a 27:11 victory in Hannover three weeks ago.

Hannover vs. Sabadell Photo by Gianluca Tancerdi

Sabadell enters the final group stage match, encouraged by a victory over Barceloneta in the Spanish League three days ago. Sabadell will play the remaining two games at home – against Hannover and Marseille. If Sabadell takes six points in these two matches (including at least a 3-goal win over Hannover on Wednesday), it will secure 2nd place, regardless of the other results.

After an excellent start to the season, Marseille came to the edge of elimination because of the losses to Hannover and Sabadell. The French will face the two Spanish teams in rounds 5 and 6. A good result in the derby against Barceloneta would be a big step toward the Top 8 round and also a signal that Marseille has started to overcome the crisis.

Standings: 1. Barceloneta 9, 2. Marseille 6, 3. Waspo 98 Hannover 6, 4. Sabadell 3.

Sabadell narrowly defeated Barceloneta 15:14 in a big Spanish derby played in the 8th round of the national championships.

Barceloneta, which has been seldom beaten at home, suffered its second home loss of the season, following a Champions League defeat to Marseille.

Sabadell and Barceloneta have faced off five times this season. Sabadell wasn’t close to a victory in the previous four matches (in the Spanish Super Cup, the Catalunya Cup, and two Champions League games).

In the 8th round’s derby, Sabadell was always ahead of the hosts. The visitors got off to a stunning start. After less than five minutes, Sabadell led 4:0. Barroso scored an opener, and Cabanas continued the series with three goals. Barceloneta tried to come back, but couldn’t equalize. The Champions League bronze medalists narrowed their deficit to one goal (4:5) in the second quarter. From that point until the 24th minute, the teams traded goals. Barceloneta finished the third quarter trailing 9:10. However, Barroso converted a man-up opportunity in Sabadell’s last possession of the third period. Asensio opened the fourth quarter with an action goal, extending the lead to 12:9.

With three minutes and six seconds remaining, Sabadell established a five-goal lead at 15:10. Although Barceloneta made a late surge, scoring four unanswered goals, it was ultimately too late. Munarriz netted the final goal of the match just two seconds before the buzzer, resulting in a final score of 14:15.

Sergi Cabanas and Alberto Barroso were Sabadell’s power engines. Cabanas scored five, and Barroso added four goals. Alberto Munarriz was Barceloneta’s top scorer with three goals.

After the 10th round, the battle for the top spot became a three-horse race, as Barceloneta, Sabadell, and Barcelona have 21 points each.
