The top four clubs in the Italian League, Pro Recco, Brescia, Savona, and Posillipo, all recorded victories in the 21st round of Serie A1, in their first matches after the break for the World Cup.
The highlight of the round was the match in Trieste, where 5th-placed Trieste hosted 3rd-placed Savona.
Savona took a slim lead thrice in the first quarter (1:0, 2:1, 3:2), but the hosts entered the second period with a 6:4 advantage. Savona leveled at 10:10 by the end of the first half. The visitors got off to a good start in the third quarter, building a two-goal lead for the first time (13:11). However, Trieste fought back and equalized. Still, Savona kept control, netting two goals in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, going to 16:14, and maintained a two-goal lead until the end, 19:17. Pietro Figlioli and Davide Occhione led Savona with three goals each, but the best scorer of the game was Trieste’s Vuk Draskovic (5 goals).
Pro Recco cruised to an 18:9 win over Florentia, despite being without several players who participated in the World Cup. Francesco Cassia and Andrea Mladossich led the scoring with four goals each.
Brescia’s defense didn’t shine in the match against Roma Vis Nova. However, the favorite collected the points, building a crucial advantage in a 9:2 second quarter. Montenegrin Vlado Popadic scored four goals in a 22:17 win, and players of the Italian national team Mario Del Basso and Filippo Ferrero added three each.
Posillipo showed no mercy to Telimar.- 17:7
Ortigia secured important points in its battle to avoid relegation with a 21:17 away win over Salerno. At halftime, Salerno held a 9:7 lead. The score was tied at 14:14 before the final quarter. In that last period, the Sicilians dominated, ultimately moving up to 13th place in the standings, ahead of Telimar, and matching Salerno in points.
