When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex travelled to Australia in 2018 on official royal business, Meghan ‘hated’ the whirlwind trip, despite huge crowds turning out, according to a royal author
Meghan Markle “hated every second” of her 2018 Australian tour with Prince Harry and reportedly considered the whole visit “pointless”, despite appearing to be in good spirits during the successful visit, according to a royal author.
The visit came just months after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s fairytale wedding, and saw Harry and Meghan spend nearly two weeks across Australia, New Zealand, Tonga and Fiji, just one day after revealing Meghan’s pregnancy. At the time, the tour was widely regarded as a triumph, with enormous crowds turning out eagerly to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds. Four years after the trip, former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown made several claims about the Aussie trip in her royal biography, The Palace Papers.

The author quoted a Palace worker who claimed Meghan loathed the Australian tour, which saw the couple visit Sydney, Melbourne, Dubbo and Queensland’s Fraser Island before heading to the Invictus Games.
The royal employee told the author: “So, Meghan must have been thrilled with it all… right? No. She apparently hated every second of it. She didn’t understand why things were set up in that way. Instead of being excited when thousands of people showed up at the Opera House, it was very much like, ‘What’s the purpose? I don’t understand this’.”
Meghan failed to grasp the ‘representational role’ of the British monarchy, the Palace staffer suggested. Speaking to The Times in 2021, another source claimed the former Suits actress “didn’t get it” when jubilant crowds gathered to welcome her and Harry in Australia.
The insider claimed that upon seeing hordes of fans waiting outside the Sydney Opera House, Meghan said to the team: “What are they all doing here? It’s silly.”
Another royal author, Valentine Low, wrote in his book Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, that Meghan “enjoyed the attention” in Australia she received but did not understand the point of royal walkabouts.
The book reads: “Although she enjoyed the attention, Meghan failed to understand the point of all those walkabouts, shaking hands with countless strangers.” Quoting unnamed members of staff, the book claims that Meghan was heard saying: “I can’t believe I’m not getting paid for this.”
Harry and Meghan headed Down Under again this week for their first trip since 2018, with this visit not being in a royal capacity. Yesterday, they completed the trip with a series of engagements in Sydney.
Meghan was interviewed on stage at a “girls’ weekend” retreat in Sydney, costing £1,400 per ticket. VIP tickets for the event at the five-star InterContinental Coogee Beach hotel cost £1,670 and include a group table photo with the duchess.
Her appearance was announced last month by Gemma O’Neill, host of the Her Best Life podcast which is organising the 300-person event. Meanwhile, Harry was the guest speaker on Thursday at the InterEdge Summit which explores the “intersection of leadership, psychosocial safety and human connection in the workplace”.
