The summer blockbuster is two solid hours of fun

It’s hard to believe it, but we’re past the halfway mark of the 2020s. As we look back on the movies that have defined this decade, one film that’s a nostalgic sequel to an ’80s classic is held up as one of the best.

With Top Gun: Maverick, it goes to show that some things are timeless — people love a good Tom Cruise action flick. Fans of the original were also reunited with Maverick’s former rival Iceman (Val Kilmer). Sadly, the movie was Kilmer’s final performance before his death in 2025.

Even so, the film wasn’t purely fan service and the sequel’s storyline and new characters were enjoyed in their own right. The summer blockbuster was a critical and commercial success.

In fact, the near-universal praise it received makes Top Gun: Maverick the highest-ranking movie of the decade, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Why is Top Gun Maverick rated the best film of the 2020s so far?

Without spoiling the film if you haven’t seen it, it follows Maverick’s return to the Top Gun training school. He must now confront his past and train a new generation of Top Gun graduates, including the son of his deceased best friend, for a dangerous mission.

The popular review aggregation website has named Top Gun: Maverick as the best rated movie of the last six years. In Rotten Tomatoes’ current ranking of the best movies of all time, the picture came in 20th place.

Viewers may be surprised to learn that it ranks a whopping 18 spots above Sinners (2025). The list’s top three The Godfather, Seven Samurai, and 2019’s Parasite.

This is what film critics generally had to say about the film, noted Rotten Tomatoes: “Top Gun: Maverick pulls off a feat even trickier than a 4G inverted dive, delivering a long-belated sequel that surpasses its predecessor in wildly entertaining style.”

As for regular audience members, their consensus reads: “If you loved the original — or enjoy some good old-school action — you need to speed your way to a screening of Top Gun: Maverick.”

“They can still make ’em like they used to,” noted Metro.
