Hyderabad: Speakers stressed on the need for public awareness with regard to the

special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls that the Election
Commission of India will commence in Telangana. At an event here on
Saturday, the Rajyanga Parirakshana Vedika (RPV) noted that officials are
required to verify voters through gram sabhas and ward-level meetings to
ensure transparency.

The programme was organised to make people aware of the intricacies and

requirements of the SIR process and ensure all eligible citizens can
exercise their vote. The event witnessed participation from people from
various professions as well as youngsters.

Speakers pointed out that in the states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, a
large number of voters had been deleted from the lists after the SIR
process. This should not be repeated in Telangana, they said.

Identification and necessary documents were required to ensure voters stayed

on the voter lists, they said. Experts said they wanted to ensure that the
name of every eligible person stayed on the voter list and asked electors to
be ready with the necessary information.

They alleged that voters were rejected from the list in other states over
incorrect spelling in the name or father’s name and said such minor
discrepancies should not make an individual ineligible for casting their

vote.

Present at the event were senior High Court advocate G. Vidyasagar,
Rajyaanga Parirakshana Vedika members including coordinator D.G. Narasimha
Rao, Uma Maheswara Rao and D.A.S. Prasad. “We have been conducting sessions
on SIR regularly. This is our seventh event in the past year, focusing on
basic rights,” said Narasimha Rao

In Bihar, around 88 lakh individual names were deleted without proper
reasons. Citing examples, speaker alleged that even after the SIR concluded
in Bihar, 80,000 voters were found with fake and wrong addresses in three
constituencies.
