Gavin and Stacey actress Joanna Page has opened up about dropping two dress sizes after concerning health test results led her to make major lifestyle changes

Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page has candidly revealed how she overhauled her lifestyle after a series of concerning health test results prompted her to reassess her wellbeing.

The actress, who is currently appearing in the new series of Taskmaster, explained that after turning 48 she decided to undergo a full set of health checks to better understand her overall condition.

Now 49, the Swansea-born star underwent a range of screenings including bowel cancer testing, a mammogram, blood tests and a cervical smear.

The results indicated that Joanna was carrying excess weight, something she admitted was not entirely unexpected, reports Wales Online.

She had previously said in the Daily Mail that she “hardly ever included fruit or veg” in her diet, pointing to long-term eating habits that contributed to the outcome.

However, the findings also had a significant emotional impact, leading her to take a more serious view of potential long-term health risks. She said: “I started worrying about diabetes, strokes, and heart disease – long-term health complications I just can’t risk as a mum of four.”

Joanna shares four children — Eva, 13, Kit, 10, Noah, eight, and Boe, four — with her husband, James Thornton, known for his role in Emmerdale.

In response to the results, she made a series of lifestyle changes, particularly focusing on improving her diet. She began incorporating more nutritious foods while cutting back on less healthy options, including eating more eggs and reducing her sugar intake.

As a result of these changes, Joanna said she has lost “a couple of dress sizes,” while still maintaining aspects of her figure she is happy with.

This is not the first time she has spoken openly about her health and personal life in recent months. Earlier this year, she told the Mirror that her daughter turning 13 prompted her to think more deeply about the future and the day her children eventually leave home.

She said: “We don’t have that many years left before she goes away to drama school or something and that has started to panic me a bit. The thought of her suddenly not being in the house makes me feel emotional. The other day, I sat in the bedroom and just cried and cried.

“I thought, ‘Life as I know it now… one day, it’s not going to be like this. Me and James will be left on our own here and they’ll be off, forming their own families.’”

Beyond acting and family life, Joanna has expanded into writing and broadcasting. Following the release of her memoir last year and a subsequent book tour, she now hosts a weekly podcast.

She added that the podcast — which her husband has appeared on — has had a positive impact on their relationship, saying: “We came out and he was absolutely buzzing, like a revitalised man, because we’d connected in two solid hours. Every single Friday, when I’m recording my episodes, it’s becoming our couples therapy.”
