In an emotional update, veteran filmmaker David Dhawan has hinted that his upcoming directorial venture, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, might be his final project. Often celebrated as the King of Comedy, he suggested that he is ready to step away from the director’s chair due to health challenges and a desire to embrace a new phase of life.
The filmmaker, who is currently busy with the project starring his son Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, and Mrunal Thakur, shared his thoughts during a recent promotional interaction. Talking about his long career and his future in the industry, David Dhawan said, “I don’t think I should do more. This might be my last film… after this, I’ll just be Varun’s father.”
Despite the close family tie, David maintained that his relationship with Varun on set remains strictly professional. Speaking about their dynamic, he explained that a director’s first priority is always a good actor. He praised Varun’s growth, mentioning that the actor has already completed 13 to 14 films and brings a deep understanding to his roles.
David said, “When I’m behind the camera, he’s not my son, he is an actor. I just need the result.” He also addressed Varun’s light-hearted comments about the lack of a full script, a common practice in David’s era of filmmaking. He recalled how legends like Salman Khan, Govinda, and Sanjay Dutt worked on trust and scene narrations rather than scripts.
The decision to consider retirement comes after a period of health struggles. David revealed that he was quite unwell during the shooting of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. He spoke fondly of Varun’s support during this time, describing him as a complete family man who stayed in constant touch with doctors to ensure his father’s well-being. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai will hit theatres on May 22.
