BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has been married to former Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Daly for more than two decades, with the couple sharing two daughters together
Vernon Kay’s BBC Radio 2 colleague said sorry to the presenter’s wife, Tess Daly, on his behalf. The apology was issued at the start of this morning’s show, after Vernon revealed he’s been battling health problems.
The 51-year-old broadcaster, who wed former Strictly Come Dancing host Tess, 57, in 2003, regularly discusses family matters on air with listeners.
The couple, who share two daughters, are currently dealing with Vernon’s ongoing back troubles which have prevented him from completing jobs around the home.
Speaking with fellow presenter Gary Davies about an upcoming appointment, Vernon explained how his condition has affected his ability to tackle gardening duties ahead of the warmer months.
Vernon revealed: “Chiropractor this afternoon….I think I’ll be a little bit better, but the thing is we’re pre-Summer aren’t we? So, at the moment, I’m getting the garden ready.”
He added: “Done a bit of lawn mowing and I’ve got a list as long as my arm of jobs to do, but I can’t do them with a bad back! I don’t want to get anyone in either.”
Gary joked that it was a good excuse, before Vernon interjected “to keep my feet up…and do absolutely nothing!”. At this point Gary exclaimed: “Sorry Tess, sorry!”
Vernon disclosed: “She sent me a message this morning on the train, ‘Why is half the lawn done?’.”
Asked whether he’d shown Tess how to operate the mower, Vernon insisted: “That’s my job, no that’s my job. That’s my job, I love it. Put my headphones in and away we go!”
This marks another occasion where Vernon has openly discussed his wellbeing in recent times, having previously revealed his anxieties surrounding the ageing process.
In a candid interview with the Telegraph, he confessed to contemplating how many festive seasons remain with his loved ones.
He shared with the publication: “That everyone else is getting older. We were making decisions about what to do for Christmas and I hope my parents don’t read this, because you think ‘How many more Christmases have we got left?’ I can’t begin to think what it will be like without them. I’m welling up just thinking about it. But that’s life isn’t it?.”
Vernon’s heartfelt remarks followed his recollection of a dramatic incident where he rescued his sibling from drowning during his mother’s milestone 40th birthday celebration.
Speaking to The Times, he remembered: “My uncle Graham, his brother Robert, his daughter, my auntie Christine, my cousin Lee, me, Dad, Mum, and my younger brother Steven all stayed in a villa in Praia da Luz on the Algarve….
“One time, I saved my brother from drowning. He dived in the pool and started panicking, so he owes me one there.
“It was my mum’s 40th birthday and I remember having peri peri chicken for the first time and Mum having her first ever cigarette. She smoked two drags and coughed for the rest of the night.”
