Chelsea winger Willian Estevao won’t play for the club again this season and is fighting to be fit for the World Cup.
The 18-year-old sustained a hamstring injury in last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester United and has been ruled out for several weeks.
Brazil open their campaign against Morocco on June 13 and it is unlikely boss Carlo Ancelotti will select Estevao in his squad unless he is fully fit by that date.
“Estevao unfortunately won’t play for us this season,” said Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane who will take charge for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds following the sacking this week of Liam Rosenior. “He is going to be out for a little bit of time. We’re here to support him.”
World Cup in potential jeopardy
Asked if he would be fit for this summer’s showpiece, McFarlane added: “I’m not sure on that if I’m honest. He won’t be available for us. I’m sure he’s very hopeful he can make the World Cup but I don’t know on that.”
Estevao has been one of the positives from Chelsea’s scattergun transfer policy following his move from Palmeiras. He has scored eight goals and provided four assists in 36 appearances during his maiden season at Stamford Bridge.
