Hyderabad: At least five workers were killed and 11 others injured when two heavy cranes collapsed on a structure where they were taking shelter, during a storm at a NCC Limited facility in Shankarpally on Monday evening. The incident occurred amid intense winds and heavy rain, triggering panic at the site. Some of the injured were stated to be in a critical condition.
According to preliminary information, the site located at Mahalingapuram is a Nagarjuna Construction Company facility where pre-cast structures and support pillars for flyovers and the Metro Rail are being manufactured.
The incident took place when around 16 workers took shelter under a temporary shed to escape a sudden downpour. Shankarpally police said two heavy cranes stationed at the site became unstable due to strong winds. One of the cranes toppled and struck the other one. The second crane then fell on the shed where the workers were standing.
Several workers were trapped under the debris. Police and fellow labourers rushed to pull out the injured. Police who were informed of the incident also arrived at the scene.
Three workers died on the spot while two others were taken to a hospital where they were declared dead. Eleven others suffered injuries and were shifted to a private hospital for treatment and a few were moved to Chevella Government Hospital.
The deceased, aged between 25 and 30, were identified as Nagendra Mathur, Ali Hussain, Sajim, Mukesh Kumar and Sonu. The workers were said to hail from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Police informed their families.
The rescue operations went on for three hours till officials confirmed that no one remained under the debris.
Preliminary findings suggested possible lapses in safety protocols, especially regarding the securing of heavy machinery during adverse weather conditions. Police said a complaint is filed by Shankarpally division revenue inspector and a case will be registered against the construction management and the technical team responsible for operations and safety clearances.
Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
