Yahya Abdul-Mateen II flaunts his Spanish-speaking skills in the new Netflix thriller
Netflix fans are eager to know how many languages Yahya Abdul-Mateen II actually speaks.
The Marvel star has taken on a new action role in brand new thriller series Man on Fire. It’s an adaptation of A.J. Quinnell’s book series, which kicked off with a 1980 novel of the same name.
There was a film version released in 2004, with Denzel Washington stepping into the shoes of main character John Creasy. This time, it’s Yahyha who plays the former mercenary.
After a decorated career as a skilled special forces agent, John leaves the field with a sever case of PTSD. But his attempt to start afresh is interrupted by a new revenge mission.
Although the series is predominantly in English, the protagonist flaunts his Spanish-speaking skills at various points. But is the actor fluent in the European language?
Does Yahya Abdul-Mateen speak Spanish?
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II doesn’t speak Spanish. He learned parts of the language specifically for the Netflix show, which is set in Brazil.
When asked how many languages he speaks, he told Revolt News: “I speak English[…]. If you teach me Spanish I can pick that up. I can pray in Arabic. And I can say a little bit of stuff in Portuguese. So I think we’re probably still at one [language]. But I can be impressive.”
In a different interview with CineXpress, the actor revealed that he hadn’t spoken Spanish since his teenage years.
“I wanted to get that right, I wanted to be respectful of the culture,” he explained. “It’s a beautiful language and I hadn’t spoken Spanish since high school, many years ago.”

“However, John is now battling extreme PTSD and personal demons. As he attempts a fresh start, he’ll find himself back in the (metaphorical) fire and fighting harder than ever.”
