Meet the Couple Behind Ladakh’s Chacha-Chachi Dhaba, a Lifeline in Snowstorms at 11000 Feet

When we think about the beauty of mountains, we imagine snow-capped peaks, winding treks, and postcard-perfect views. What we often don’t picture is the quiet, constant struggle of living at such extreme altitudes, where the weather can turn in minutes, and survival is never guaranteed.

For travellers passing through the rugged terrain of Lahaul-Spiti, the journey is often about adventure. But when roads close, temperatures plummet, and help feels miles away, that adventure can quickly turn into uncertainty.

Run by Dorje Bodh and Hishe Chhomo, this small roadside dhaba stands as a promise, that no one who arrives here will be turned away.

In those moments, what people look for is not a view but a safe place to rest, to warm up, to simply make it through the night.

And at 11,000 feet, that safety comes from an unlikely place.

When a dhaba that became a lifeline

In the remote village of Batal, where mobile networks disappear and infrastructure is almost non-existent, a small roadside eatery quietly stands as a beacon of hope. Run by Dorje Bodh and Hishe Chhomo, fondly known as ‘Chacha’ and ‘Chachi’, this humble dhaba has been serving not just food but something far more vital — survival.

For over four decades, the couple has welcomed anyone who arrives at their door. Trekkers, bikers, tourists and, sometimes, people with nowhere else to go.

Because here, there are no backup plans. No nearby hotels and no emergency services that can arrive in time. If you are stranded, this dhaba isn’t just an option, it’s your only chance.

When storms hit, they show up

Over the years, Chacha and Chachi have found themselves at the centre of some of the region’s most challenging moments.

In 1998, when a sudden snowstorm left more than 100 tourists stranded, it was this small dhaba that became their refuge. For six long days, the couple sheltered them, shared whatever food they had, and ensured everyone stayed alive despite the harsh conditions outside.

When snowstorms sealed off the mountains and stranded travellers had nowhere to go, this tiny kitchen became a refuge for dozens fighting to survive.

More recently, in 2021, another blizzard trapped around 80 people near Chandratal. Once again, without hesitation, they opened their doors. No questions were asked and no one was turned away.

Because in a place like Batal, waiting for help isn’t an option.

More than a meal, a promise

Through freezing nights, blocked roads, and years of isolation, Dorje and Hishe have continued to do what they do best, show up for strangers in need.

What began as a simple dhaba has, over time, become something much deeper. A place of refuge. A space of warmth in the harshest of landscapes. A quiet promise that no one will be left behind.

Chacha Chachi Dhabha
In a place where survival is never guaranteed, their constant presence turns fear into hope, proving that compassion can endure even the harshest landscapes.

Their story is a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful acts of kindness don’t come from grand gestures but from consistently being there, especially when it matters the most.

And high up in the mountains, where the air is thin and the nights unforgiving, that presence can mean the difference between fear and hope, between despair and survival.

Because for this Chacha and Chachi, this was never just about running a dhaba, it was always about saving lives.
