'Watson' Ending Explained, John And Sherlock's Fate, The Surgery, Secrets And The Ambiguous Finale

The final episode of Watson Season 2, Cobalt Fissure, will be the last episode of the series. So, as fans prepare to bid goodbye to their much-loved show, let’s take a quick look at what happened in the series’ finale. Here’s how the series ended the journey of ‘John Watson’ while folding in another character from Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. Warning: Spoilers ahead!

What happened to ‘Sherlock Holmes’ in Watson’s finale?

The episode began with ‘John Watson’ preparing for surgery at a Baltimore-based clinic to deal with the glioblastoma in his brain. However, he flees upon hearing that ‘Sherlock Holmes’, whom he’s been hallucinating all season, has appeared back in Pittsburgh, and the latter’s symptoms are: memory loss, dehydration, hypotension, and elevated liver enzymes. ‘John Watson’ and the rest of the doctors spend much of the episode debating various treatments and potential diagnoses. Nonetheless, ‘Sherlock Holmes’s’ condition lies in an old case he and ‘John Watson’ investigated years ago.

They reminisce about it as ‘Sherlock Holmes’s’ memory returns, recalling how a three-day pursuit of an adversary led them to a weapons testing site populated by soldiers clad in biohazard gear. It was radioactive, and both were in close proximity to it, which contributed to their individual ailments. As ‘Sherlock Holmes’ finally received the treatment he needed, ‘Watson’ continued to get worse, his tumour giving him seizures that grow in severity throughout the episode.

Who is ‘Sebastian Moran’ and what was his role in Watson?

Fans finally get to see ‘Sebastian Moran’ in the finale of Watson as ‘Moriarty’s’ successor. As it turns out, he had been keeping ‘Sherlock Holmes’ hostage and needed him treated so he could continue to use him. For the same reasons, he needed to get ‘John Watson’s’ attention, and he even killed a nurse and threatened ‘Mary Morstan’ about involving the police. Meanwhile, despite his memory gaps, ‘Sherlock Holmes’ recognised ‘Sebastian’ and helped track him using clues about his dyslexia and use of ‘x’ in aliases.

‘Shinwell’ eventually located him at a hotel under the false name ‘Alexander Cox’. However, he too had a personal vendetta. ‘Shinwell’ believed that ‘Sebastian’ had killed the ‘Evanses’, though ‘Sebastian’ denies it. Torn between his violent past and reformed life, ‘Shinwell’ ends up forcing ‘Sebastian’ to reveal key information, even extracting his teeth, but ultimately turns him over to the authorities instead of killing him. He confesses to ‘Carlin’, admitting his struggle, and she forgives him, affirming his belief that no one is beyond redemption.

What else happened in the finale of Watson?

While the main arc of the series focused on ‘John Watson’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes’, it also addressed questions in the subplots, including ‘Sasha’s’ struggle with emotional fallout. She found herself unsteady after learning her true parentage, leaving her unsure of her identity. Meanwhile, ‘Stephens’ offered her commitment and a future together, but she turned him down, asserting that she needed to understand herself before being with anyone else. We also see ‘Ingrid’ avoid consequences for killing ‘Beck’, claiming self-defence despite ‘Lestrade’s’ suspicions and lack of evidence. Both ‘Ingrid’ and ‘Sasha’ face unresolved childhood conflicts. However, while ‘Sasha’ chooses self-discovery over love, ‘Ingrid’ continues to grapple with her dark tendencies without legal repercussions.

What happens to ‘John Watson’ in the Watson finale?

Now, coming to our main character, ‘John Watson’: while he was able to save the life of his old mentor, he endangered his own life to the point of no coming back. After suffering multiple seizures, he prepares for the surgery. We see his colleagues get emotional as they thank him, giving the climax the uncertainty that made fans clench their seats. ‘Morstan,’ his ex-wife, tells him that her “entire world changed” the day she met him. ‘John Watson’, completely moved by her words, wakes and recalls the moment earlier in Season 2 when he walked in on her kissing her new boyfriend, ‘Josh’. He was quoted as saying:

“I was there to say I love you. I have this picture of you and me and we’re living on Baker Street in London and we’re having breakfast but we’re not talking because we don’t need to talk. We have everything we need.”

The biggest question, however, was whether ‘John Watson’ survived the surgery. Well, that is something that would depend on how the viewers decide to interpret the ending. The title card rises just as the surgery begins, and in a brief epilogue, we’re transported to 221B Baker Street in London: the address of ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘John Watson’s’ residence in Conan Doyle’s series. As the rain falls, ‘John’ arrives and checks the mail, and ‘Morstan’ opens the front door to greet him. However, whether it was true or just his idea of heaven remains ambiguous.
