KURNOOL: Strong gale winds and unseasonal rains have caused extensive damage to banana plantations across Kadapa district, leaving farmers facing heavy losses.
Banana cultivation is widespread in Pulivendula, Rajampet and Railway Koduru constituencies. Winds that lashed the region from Sunday night to Monday night severely damaged crops that were nearing harvest.
Farmers in Ayyavaripalli village of Vempalli mandal were among the worst affected, with standing crops uprooted within hours.
Farmer K. Chandramohan Reddy said he cultivated about 800 banana plants across three acres but lost the entire crop. Farmers in Railway Koduru and Rajampet also reported complete crop loss across several acres.
Many said the destruction came at a crucial stage, leaving them with debts and no returns after months of investment. The affected farmers have urged the government to conduct field assessments quickly and provide compensation for losses caused by the unseasonal weather.
