According to a report by People, the co-anchor of Today made an unexpected exit on May 6, 2026, just 30 minutes before the show was set to end. Around 8:30 am ET on May 6, 2026, it was Savannah’s co-anchor, Craig Malvin, who announced her abrupt exit. He also assured Savannah’s fans that she would return to the Today show, the next day, on May 7, 2026. At the time, Craig was out on the Today Show Plaza with Jenna Bush Hager, Sheinelle Jones, Carson Daly and Dylan Dreyer.

She was joined by Willie Geist, and the duo was having a discussion about the Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle. In fact, during the candid discussion, Savannah also recounted her fond memories when she dressed as Reese Witherspoon’s character, ‘Elle Woods’, for the Today show’s Halloween special. She was quoted as saying:
“I know, I love Legally Blonde. I connect with this character, and now we get to see her in high school.”

During the conversation, Savannah shared that she wanted to return to the place and the people whom she considers her ‘family’. Savannah mentioned that she was a bit unsure whether she could be the same person on the show as in her personal life, as she was going through a lot. She was quoted as saying:
“And I want to be with my family. And so I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try. It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness, and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not, but I can’t not come back, because it’s my family. I think it’s part of my purpose right now.”

Later, the Pima County Sheriff clarified that all siblings and spouses were ruled out as suspects. He said:
“To be clear… the Guthrie family, to include all siblings and spouses, has been cleared as possible suspects. The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious, and are victims in this case. The Guthrie family are victims, plain and simple.”
