Netflix’s Legends has taken the viewers by storm with its impeccable storyline and performances. However, did you know that the show revolves around a real-life undercover operation that took place in the 1990s and the character ‘Guy Stanton’ essayed by Tom Burke is not a fictional character but rather a real person? Well, Legends, written by Neil Forsyth, who is also known for his projects such as The Gold and Guilt, took inspiration from a real undercover operation to bust the UK’s most dangerous drug gangs.
However, instead of recruiting the police, the government tasked everyday Customs officers with developing alternate personas (known as “legends”) and infiltrating groups of smugglers, traffickers, and dealers. ‘Guy Stanton’ was one of these recruits. However, as the ending of Legends suggests, his treachery against heroin-peddling criminals took a heavy toll, even to this day. So, as the viewers watch the six-episode series, let’s take a quick look at who the real ‘Guy Stanton’ is.
Who is ‘Guy Stanton’?
According to reports, ‘Guy Stanton’ is a 60-something south London native whose memoir, The Betrayer: How An Undercover Unit Infiltrated The Global Drug Trade, served as an inspiration for Legends. In the 1990s, he had a normal 9-to-5 job until he was recruited for Beta Projects, HM Customs’ innovative and risky initiative to train undercover officers to target drug smugglers. He worked undercover for 11 years of his 35-year Customs tenure. While his wife, ‘Sophie’, played by Charlotte Ritchie in the series, knew what he was doing, his friends and family thought he had a “quiet office job”.
However, the reality behind ‘Guy Stanton’s’ work was completely different. He had brought himself into favour amongst incredibly dangerous criminals and didn’t skimp on his persona, either. He’d wear a GBP 175,000 Rolex watch he had borrowed from Customs, along with designer shirts and shoes, all of which made him seem more convincing. However, seeing ‘Guy’ in Legends led many to question who the man was in real life.
Meet the man behind ‘Guy Stanton’
‘Guy Stanton’ is actually an alias for the Customs officer who infiltrated the organised crime group. However, to keep his identity secure and protect his family, he never revealed his real name in any interview. In fact, even during the Times interview, he kept his camera off during the Zoom call. When asked if he was still concerned about his safety. The man was quoted as saying:
“We’re now talking about 35, 40 years ago. A lot of [the real gangsters] are now dead. A lot of them were my age and are now older, well into their seventies and eighties, and are not the forces that they were at that time.”

However, while ‘Guy Stanton’ still uses his alias, he revealed that his “legend” eventually had to “die”. ‘Guy’ during the conversation revealed that he was undercover for too long and showed his gratitude towards his handler, who suspected he was in real danger and “refused to allow me to go into a meeting where I’m sure now I would have been murdered,” he told The Sun. According to reports, he was later diagnosed with leukaemia, and he was also accused of taking bribes, but the charges were dropped due to a lack of evidence.
Is the real ‘Guy Stanton’ married?
Just like shown in the series, ‘Guy Stanton’ is also married in real life. According to reports, he is married to someone named ‘Jo’. However, little is known about their relationship, partly due to security concerns and to protect their family. Nonetheless, ‘Guy’ once mentioned that ‘Jo’ also worked for HM Customs. The ‘legend’ told The Sun that ‘Jo’ would lay out all his kits for him and always check the pockets. He was quoted as saying:
“The worst terror for a UC, an undercover investigator, was being caught with documents or identification. You’re never going to talk your way out of that.”
Where is ‘Guy Stanton’ now?
‘Guy Stanton’ is no longer working for Customs. However, he has not completely given up the investigative world. The ‘legend’ now works as a private investigator and has reportedly lectured foreign law enforcement on covert tactics due to his Customs experience.

Is ‘Guy Stanton’ still affected by the memories of the undercover operation?
In the series, Steve Coogan’s ‘Don’ talks about how hard it can be to let go of your “legend”. ‘Guy Stanton’ reflected on the same in a conversation with The Times and revealed that he has not revisited that world for a long time. However, certain traits are still with him. He also admitted that what he endured and witnessed had affected him and was quoted as saying:
“We go into a restaurant, and it’s a standard joke that I’ll sit with my back to the wall. Or in a corner, looking at the door. That was because I did it for so long to avoid anybody just rushing in on you….Yes, it did affect me. And my wife always says that I’ve seen terrible things and terrible people, and I always used to be the ultimate optimist. I think now, sometimes, I’m a bit of a glass-half-empty person. You just look at the news, and rather than thinking, we’ll get over this, you think the worst. It did affect me, to know these people are there, to know that that world exists and continues to exist.”
