Bidar: In a major boost to specialised healthcare facilities in the Kalyana Karnataka region, the foundation stone was laid on Wednesday for a 100-bed Kidwai Peripheral Cancer Treatment Centre at the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences campus.

The Rs 36-crore project is expected to significantly improve access to cancer treatment for patients from Bidar and neighbouring areas.

The foundation stone for the facility was laid by Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister and Bidar district in-charge Eshwar B Khandre.

Addressing the gathering, Khandre said the upcoming centre, being developed in association with Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, would help patients from the backward Kalyana Karnataka region access quality cancer treatment closer to home.

The minister expressed concern over the increasing number of oral cancer cases linked to gutka and tobacco consumption and the rising incidence of breast cancer among women. Stressing the importance of early detection, he said cancer could be completely cured if identified in its initial stages and urged people to stay away from tobacco and other harmful habits.

Khandre said the proposed facility would be equipped with modern technology and advanced treatment infrastructure, enabling early diagnosis and timely treatment for patients in the region.

Municipal Administration and Haj Minister Rahim Khan said the government was taking steps to improve healthcare services across the district and noted that four hospitals were being started in Bidar district.

He said people of the region should have access to quality medical care, including advanced cancer treatment facilities.

KADA chairman Babu Honnanayak, Additional Deputy Commissioner Shivanand Karale, BRIMS director Dr Shantala Koujalagi and others were present.
