The New York Mets, under Steve Cohen, have typically been one of MLB’s biggest spenders. That was no different this offseason, as the Mets spent a ton on their roster.

Though that big spending hasn’t worked out, the Mets are at 16-25 on the season and well outside of the postseason hunt at the moment.

Things are so bad that the Mets have been rumored to end up as sellers. And a trade rumor from Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer on San Francisco GiantsRafael Devers is a great example of how tough reality is for the Mets right now.

“Nobody needs offense more than the Mets…” Rymer writes. “… But given how things are going amid their 16-25 start, do you really think Steve Cohen or David Stearns has the appetite for another high-cost, high-risk player? One doubts it.”

With the Mets’ struggles this season with players that are expensive but risky, namely with Luis Robert Jr., Bo Bichette, Jorge Polanco, and Marcus Semien, it would be tough for the Mets to also add Devers to the mix.

Mets trade rumor on Rafael Devers would be tough to pull off

The Mets surely have the resources to pull off a trade for Devers, the All-Star Giants slugger in the middle of a $313.5 million contract.

But, the issue for the Mets isn’t how much it would cost to trade for Devers, but rather how Devers and his mediocre .677 OPS this season would mesh with the roster.

The Mets are already dealing with struggles from key players offensively, and adding someone like Devers, who is making a ton of money and is struggling this season, would be a risk not worth taking.

Maybe in the offseason, when the Mets can shed a lot of money, Devers could be a more realistic trade option. But at this year’s trade deadline, it’s hard to imagine that the timing is right for the Mets to acquire someone like Devers.

Normally, this is the kind of trade target the Mets would be excited to pursue. But, with how things are going this season, the bitter reality is that Devers isn’t a realistic trade target for a struggling Mets team.
