Hyderabad: A coordinated investigation by Kanchanbagh police led to the detection of an organised interstate mobile phone snatching and pickpocketing gang involved in several offences across Hyderabad and surrounding areas.

The probe began after Syed Nazeer Ahmed lodged a complaint on Friday, stating that bike‑borne offenders had snatched his high‑end mobile phone near DMRL X Road. Special teams were formed immediately. By analysing CCTV footage, suspect movements and technical intelligence, police unearthed a syndicate operating in Hyderabad, Secunderabad and other parts of Telangana, said Rajendranagar DCP S. Sreenivas.

The arrested accused are Ambata Naresh alias Kavati Naresh, Banala Arun Kumar alias Nani, Mekala Chiranjeevi alias Chiru, Thota Suri alias Suresh alias Surya, Thota Chandu and receiver Sandeep Jaiswal. Others, including Thota Vasanth, Shashi and Prem, remain absconding. The gang is suspected in more than 15 offences statewide.

Modus operandi

The gang targeted crowded public places such as bus stops, markets, tiffin centres and RTC stations. Members operated in groups using motorcycles, dividing roles into spotters, surveillance, snatchers and riders. Victims were distracted with tactics like dropping currency notes or covering movements with newspapers. Stolen mobiles were sold to shops for ₹1,500–₹2,000, dismantled into spare parts, or circulated at low prices after erasing identification details.

Police seized 132 batteries, 172 mobile circuits without motherboards and 73 camera parts of various brands.
