Hyderabad:Senior doctors from the Indian Society of Hypertension (ISH) will conduct screenings for hypertension in parks and public places in the city, starting from Hyderabad to mark World Hypertension Week being observed from Monday to May 25. The society is also looking to research and compile data on hypertension for the state of Telangana.

Nearly one-third of Hyderabad’s adult population is said to suffer from hypertension, while more than half remain unaware of their condition due to the absence of visible symptoms in the early stages, society members said. The doctors noted that hypertension in women was witnessed on a large scale.

Dr Lily Rodrigues, president of the society’s Hyderabad chapter, turned the focus on pregnant women who are hypertensive. “There are two types of cases —already hypertensive mothers giving birth and pregnancy-induced hypertension. The causes are genetic predisposition, gestational diabetes leading to hypertension and it has become more and more in number. Regular check-ups are mandatory.”

Addressing women’s health concerns, Dr L. Sesha Sailaja said, “Women, especially after menopause, face a greater risk of hypertension due to hormonal and physiological changes. Regular health monitoring and awareness are extremely important.”

Dr Ch Vasanth Kumar, president of the Indian Society of Hypertension (ISH), and Dr Udai Lal, said, “The changing lifestyle pattern among urban populations said, “Increasing work pressure, unhealthy food habits and physical inactivity have become major reasons behind uncontrolled blood pressure levels. Prevention starts with lifestyle correction.”
