Visakhapatnam: The coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh are likely to witness severe heatwave conditions till Sunday, with several areas expected to record extremely high temperatures over the next three days.
Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) managing director Prakhar Jain said temperatures have already surged sharply, with Komminapadu in Nellore recording 44.3°C and Kadapa 42.9°C on Monday. He stated that alerts have been issued to district administrations and mandal-level officials, while warning messages are being sent to people at the field level.
According to APSDMA forecasts, several districts including Vizianagaram, Eluru, Bapatla, Prakasam and Palnadu are likely to witness temperatures between 44°C and 46°C on May 19. On May 20 and May 21, it may further rise to 45°C to 47°C in several coastal and Rayalaseema districts.
The warning further stated that a severe heatwave is expected in 47 mandals on Tuesday and may affect 177 mandals by Wednesday. Heatwave conditions are also likely in hundreds of other mandals across the state.
The APSDMA advised people, especially senior citizens, pregnant women and lactating mothers, to avoid venturing outdoors between 11 am and 4 pm unless absolutely necessary. People suffering from heart ailments, diabetes and blood pressure issues were urged to remain indoors and stay hydrated by consuming lemon water, buttermilk, coconut water and plenty of drinking water.
The authority also cautioned farmers and shepherds against taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and lightning associated with unseasonal rains.
