Mackenzie Shirilla's Father, Steve Put On Administrative Leave After Netflix's 'The Crash' Backlash

Mackenzie Shirilla has been making headlines ever since the documentary, The Crash, was released on Netflix. It followed the events of July 31, 2022, where an accident took the lives of Dominic (Dom) Russo and Davion Flanagan. According to reports, Mackenzie was driving at 100 MPH when she crashed her car into a brick wall. The Netflix documentary has put her back into the spotlight after the tragic wreck. However, amid that, her father, Steve Shirilla, has also been placed on administrative leave.

The Crash was released on Netflix on May 15, 2026, and has since created an intense buzz around the 2022 Ohio Case. The accident happened at the intersection of Alameda Drive and Progress Drive in Strongsville, and even after years, it remains one of the most gut-wrenching cases. However, while people are shocked by what happened, the incident seems to have impacted the Shirilla family’s life once again, especially as Mackenzie Shirilla’s father, Steve Shirilla, faces the aftermath of the 2022 incident.

According to reports, Steve has now been placed on administrative leave from his position at Mary Queen of Peace School in Cleveland since the release of his comments. The school website has suggested that he is an art and digital media teacher. News outlets have reported that an email was sent to the parents, which could be read as:

“Dear Mary Queen of Peace School Parents, Families, and Guardians, We are investigating allegations made on social media that one of our teachers has demonstrated poor judgment. Upon learning of the allegation, the school acted immediately and placed the teacher on administrative leave. The investigation is ongoing. We want every parent and family to know that the safety, well-being, and trust of our students remain among our highest priorities. ”

The email further assured that the school takes all student concerns extremely seriously and is committed to responding to any and all concerns brought forward as soon as possible. The email states that while they “are limited in what we can share during an active personnel investigation, please know that we are reviewing the matter and will provide additional communication as appropriate.” They concluded the email by thanking the parents for their understanding and support.

Parents react to Mackenzie Shirilla’s father, Steve Shirilla, being put on leave

In a conversation with 19 News, a parent responded to the news that Mackenzie Shirilla’s father, Steve Shirilla, had been placed on administrative leave. The parent who asked to remain anonymous revealed that while the students loved and respected Mr Shrilla as a teacher, what he said didn’t come across as “tasteful”. They were quoted as saying:

“As a parent, I can understand the desire to support and protect your daughter; however, I do think the way a lot of this was handled by the parents wasn’t tasteful, and some of the light that Mr Shirilla has been in due to this case and the documentary draws a negative light to our school and is drawing a scary amount of attention to our kids. The administrative leave he was placed on was not for actions he had done at the school itself, but as a result of the backlash of the community.”

The parent added that the school and the Catholic Diocese conduct background checks and due diligence when hiring teachers, and that when they hired Steve Shirilla, there was nothing in his background to make anyone doubt him. For the unversed, Steve was hired by the school over two and a half years before the crash. The parent asserted that no amount of background search could have told them what happened behind the closed doors of someone’s home, and hence, the school should not be blamed for what happened in 2022.

The parent also admitted that background checks couldn’t have predicted the future actions of Steve Shirilla’s daughter, Mackenzie Shirilla. They added that, according to them, as a parent, it was not fair for the school, staff, children or families to receive hate and threats because of third-hand actions. They added:

“There is no reason to be threatening an elementary school. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved in the incident that took place that night in Strongsville. While we know life will never be the same, and nobody can simply recover from a tragedy like that, we hope that everyone finds the peace that they need to be able to keep going daily.”

Steve Shirilla confirms the news, asserts his daughter is innocent

In a conversation with 19 News, Steve Shirilla confirmed the email sent out by Mary Queen of Peace School and revealed that the news of his being placed on administrative leave was, in fact, correct. During the interaction, he expressed his dismay with the documentary. He shared that he is upset with how the edited version of it came out, and claimed there was more to it than what was shared in the documentary. He also asserted that he believes that his daughter, Mackenzie Shirilla, is innocent and that there is more to the story.
